During my time with female entrepreneurs at the Center for Women & Enterprise, we discussed several HR topics at a high level. I'd like to share those highlights with you and some detail during the next few posts. One of the topics we discussed was job descriptions and job postings. Job descriptions are internal documents that explain the responsibilities and expectations of the role in a detailed manner. Job postings are the positions that are shared online - job openings - so candidates can apply. They are important but let's face it, some of them are boring and stale. Job postings are one of the first ways that potential candidates meet your organization. They are a marketing tool and an information tool. The way you carve out resources, time, and creativity to craft a communication to your customers is the same way you should handle crafting a job posting. It's an opportunity to excitingly communicate and educate potential candidates about the organization and the job. Which leads me to the next point...job postings have a tendency to communicate all of the tasks and responsibilities. Little time is spent on the impact and results you hope the position will achieve. And that part is the exciting part! Candidates get excited about the possibilities for impact that the role offers more so than the tasks. Who loves perks and benefits? ??♀? WIIFT (what's in it for them) Sharing the perks, benefits and resources available for them to be successful and feel cared for are great to share on that job posting. They will encourage the candidate to apply as they consider how the organization has already planned to take care of their needs. Again, these are just broad considerations when creating job postings. More factors can be incorporated. Ultimately, job postings are important tools for marketing and enticing candidates to join your company and build their career. What else would you add? When was the last time you played? I mean, played like a child without inhibition and fully embracing the moment? I know it had been awhile for me when my daughter asked me to play with her. First of all, I felt cool for a few seconds and then...I realized she wanted me to create...using these circular things (see pic below). Aside from feeling tired (as most parents feel), I felt dread at the thought of having to figure out something to build. Right then, my daughter must've read my face because she said "it's ok mommy - just make anything you want - it will be great no matter what". How encouraging, right? So, I started putting pieces together and then I grabbed the instructions (who does that?!). Would you know that I was able to build the items in the picture??!! I'm so proud of myself. It turns out that playing is still a viable and effective tool for learning. Go figure! Somehow in our journey towards adulting, we forget to play. Or actually, we choose not to play because we view it as a waste of time. However, play still has the power to expand our mind, to help us create, to laugh and even to spend quality time with loved ones. If you're feeling stuck on a project or in a creative rut, try playing! Go outside, play frisbee or tag (remember that?), jump rope (watch out for those knees though), play cards/board games, or grab some legos. Play like a kid - just to have fun...and you actually might have fun and unlock your "stuckness" (yes, I made up a word). #leadership #growth #dei
