Perks of the job! ??? Last week, our Gallery Director Michele Bambling took us on a staff tour of Japan Society’s newly opened exhibition, "Kotobuki: Auspicious Celebrations of Japanese Art from New York Private Collections." During her walk-through, she explained that the exhibition design was inspired by Japanese gardens, inviting visitors to “stroll” through the space as if walking a garden path. We also learned the hidden meanings behind various auspicious symbols—like cranes, plums and Mount Fuji—all evoking longevity and the changing seasons. Last month, we had the pleasure of leading a Japanese calligraphy workshop for our corporate member Nomura at their New York office for their Employee Network Recognition event. Under the suggestion of Nomura CEO and President Satoshi Kawamura, participants learned how to write the character “今” (ima, meaning “now”), practicing basic brush strokes and completing their works with a zodiac stamp for the Year of the Snake. ????? Hiroshi Sugimoto’s "Radio City Music Hall, New York" captures a fleeting moment from the 1978 Easter Show at the iconic Manhattan venue. While preparing to photograph for his celebrated "Theaters" series, the renowned Japanese photographer was struck by the movement of the full orchestra and line dance, deciding to test his exposure and lens resolution mid-performance. The result—a luminous stage bathed in radiant white light—was rediscovered over four decades later among his old negatives and now takes its place as a striking addition to the series. In honor of Yoko Shioya’s 20th anniversary as Japan Society’s Artistic Director, Sugimoto, a longtime friend and collaborator, has generously donated this rare print to support the future of our Performing Arts Program. Bridging Business & Innovation: Was great to host the KEIZAI DOYUKAI Japan Association of Corporate Executives delegation, led by Chairman Tak Niinami for an exclusive roundtable discussion at Japan Society on their timely visit. Bringing together top Japanese CEOs, American business leaders, and Japan Society’s board members, the conversation focused on the U.S. economic outlook, market trends, and key innovations shaping U.S.-Japan relations. The exchange of perspectives was dynamic, insightful, and underscored the deep economic ties between our two nations and critical role leadership in the private sector plays in U.S.-Japan relations. A huge thank you to our Chair Merit Janow and Vice Chair Douglas Peterson for moderating all star panels including Linda Kirkpatrick, Lynn Martin, Richard Edelman, Daniel Simkowitz, Joe Bae and Marc Holliday. Congratulations to Shiori Ito on her historic Oscar and BAFTA nominations for #BlackBoxDiaries! ?? Last week, we had the honor of hosting a special reception ahead of the UN Commission on the Status of Women 69th Session, where we celebrated her groundbreaking exposé and her distinction as the first Japanese filmmaker nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the #AcademyAwards. At the event, Ito addressed UN representatives, journalists, and gender equality and women's rights experts, calling for continued global momentum in the fight against abuses of power and for justice for sexual violence survivors.
