The Deep Culture Podcast is celebrating its 50th episode! Thank you for staying tuned with us! How do we learn to look at the world from a new cultural perspective? In this episode Joseph Shaules and Ishita Ray argue that expanding our circle of empathy is more difficult than it might seem. Empathizing across cultures is effortful and can make us question our values and identity. Listen as Sanne Bosma LL.M. , Emre Seven, Liu Liu and Torhild Liane Haarr Sk?rnes share stories of their empathic adventures. Stay tuned! https://lnkd.in/d75EkaVb

关于我们
The Japan Intercultural Institute (JII) is a non-profit institute supporting education, research and career development for intercultural professionals. It offers seminars, sponsors research, and promotes best practices in intercultural training and education. Its core mission is to encourage the deep forms of learning that come from intercultural experiences and foreign language learning. Our Learning Mission–A Vision of Edward Hall Visionary thinker Edward T. Hall (e.g. The Silent Language, 1959) felt that globalization creates challenges and opportunities for humankind. Hall believed that the biggest barrier to deep forms of intercultural understanding is our blindness to how culture shapes our mind and perceptions. Today, research in cultural psychology and cognitive neuroscience is shedding new light on how culture shapes fundamental elements of cognition, emotion, and identity. JII’s deep culture seminars are at the cutting edge of adapting the latest insights in mind, brain and education sciences to fulfill Hall’s vision.

What does it mean to “learn” a culture??It's more than dos and don'ts. It's not just an abstraction. What is happening at the level of the mind? In the latest episode of the Deep Culture Podcast—?Beyond WEIRD Approaches (Part 2): Deep Culture Learning?-?Ishita Ray and I talk about how insights from cultural psychology can help us answer this question. We learn about embodied culture, predictive processing, and how our intuitive mind learns new patterns of perception. We find out the four key insights that we need for deep cultural learning.?The Deep Culture Approach represents a radical departure from traditional pedagogy. Instead of?shallow does or don’ts, or abstract models, it is grounded in an empirical understanding of how the mind works.?Don't miss it! Special welcome to Sanne Bosma LL.M., the newest member of the podcast team. Also, there have been changes to the podcast team. Special thanks to Yvonne Van der Pol, a co-founder and long-time contributor to the podcast, and Zeina M. and Daniel Glinz, for all they've contributed over the last 3 seasons. As always, thanks to Ishita Ray, Emre Seven, Robinson Fritz, Liu Liu, and Ikumi Fritz. What a great team! https://lnkd.in/gZYJBfRW

NEW EPISODE! Intercultural education is sometimes criticized as being too WEIRD–Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic. But what does that mean? In this two-part episode, Joseph Shaules, Ishita Ray and Emre Seven trace the origins of the term WEIRD to the work of Joseph Henrich. He argues that people from WEIRD countries are psychological outliers. We hear Liu Liu reflect on the challenges of adjusting to WEIRD psychology, and discuss how intercultural education has been influenced by its WEIRD roots. Zeina M. We look forward to welcoming you back in September for Season 5. #intercultural?#interculturalcommunication?#interculturaleducation?#podcast?#brainandmind?#psychology?of?#culture?#culturalpsychology?#travel?#experience #japaninterculturalinstitute?#sietar?#culturalworld?#culturaldifference?#difference?#brain?#cultureshock?#diversity?#globalmind?#cultureis?#seasonfinale?#4thseason?#inclusion?#culturalbridge?#weird?#western?#educated?#industrialized?#rich?#démocratie

Why do we need intercultural education? What good does it do? Intercultural educators often find themselves faced with these questions. Learners often don't see why they need this “intercultural stuff”. In this episode of the Deep Culture Podcast, Joseph Shaules and I discuss these questions. The fact is, humans are ethnocentric by nature, and intercultural understanding is not natural. So it’s normal that learners don’t see the value of intercultural education. On the other hand, foreign experience can be eye-opening . . . they can stretch our mind and teach us new ways to look at the world. The goal of intercultural education is to help make that happen. Do check?it out! Thanks to Emre Seven for telling his story about discovering that for certain Americans, Turkey doesn't exist! And thanks to the podcast team for the rich conversations and learning: Yvonne Van der Pol, Zeina Matar, PhD, Daniel Glinz, Liu Liu, Robinson Fritz, and Ikumi Fritz. https://lnkd.in/gHKPmd_N

Is gender cultural? Oddly, gender is rarely mentioned in intercultural education, even though expectations about being a man or woman vary widely around the world. In?this month’s Deep Culture Podcast, Yvonne Van der Pol, Ishita Ray and I explore cultural assumptions about gender. We also hear from Emre Seven and Zeina M. as they share their experiences navigating different gender worlds, and we also learn about research into gender attitudes.?If you like this podcast, please pass it on to your networks! As usual thanks also to the rest of the podcast team: Daniel Glinz, Robinson Fritz, Liu Liu and Ikumi Fritz. https://lnkd.in/dzAYSGFB

NEW EPISODE! In this episode, Joseph Shaules and Ishita Ray explore cultural intuitions–the ability to “read the air” and interpret our environment. Research into intuitions–the feeling of knowing–helps us understand why developing new cultural intuitions is so challenging. We discuss the feel-good fallacy–the idea that having the right attitude is not enough to avoid cultural misunderstanding. Ishita recounts the “body shock” she experienced in France the first time she experienced a bise . . . a kiss on the cheek, and Yvonne Van der Pol and Emre Seven share stories of the dilemmas they faced because of mismatched cultural intuitions. Is motivation a basic drive that’s the same everywhere? Does it depend on culture? In the latest episode of the Deep Culture Podcast, Yvonne Van der Pol and I explore the latest insights into culture and motivation. We learn that our experience of motivation depends on our cultural self. We hear stories from Liu Liu ACC, Emre Seven and Ishita Ray about independent versus interdependent motivation, and find out about the two motivational systems that are critical for cultural learning. So happy to have Liu Liu as the newest member of the podcast team--he brings a world of experience and insight to the podcast! NEW EPISODE! In this episode, Joseph Shaules and Emre Seven tell the story of cultural explorer Franz Boas. Born in 1858, Boas brought a scientific mind to the study of human diversity. We learn about his near-death experience studying the Inuit in the Canadian arctic, and the scientific debates he engaged in (e.g. against racism). His insights?are relevant for all cultural bridge people even today. Stay Tuned! https://lnkd.in/dtSJvD2A https://lnkd.in/dDtV8CQK Yvonne Van der Pol Ishita Ray Daniel Glinz Robinson Fritz Zeina M. I wanted to share a wonderful conversation I had with Dr. Emiliano T. Bosio, Ph.D. about Global Citizenship. He does extensive work in this area (e.g. see his book Conversations on Global Citizenship Education, or his Youtube Channel). We had a very open discussion, including some critiques of the notion of global citizenship. Thanks Emiliano and I look forward to further engagement! #globalcitizenship #globaleducation https://lnkd.in/gAnfYbXj

NEW EPISODE! Why are we blind to culture? This episode explores culture and the unconscious mind. We learn how our understanding of culture and mind has changed over time–from a realm of powerful urges and shameful desires, to a more scientific view of the autopilot of everyday life; one that has been customized by culture. And yet, culture’s influence on our minds is invisible to us. Hosted by Joseph Shaules and Ishita Ray with special thanks to Daniel Glinz Yvonne Van der Pol Zeina M.
