Emojis are now ubiquitous in LinkedIn posts ??, but do you know how they originated? Read on to find out... As Japan Intercultural Consulting’s Swiss representative, I had the pleasure of attending an insightful Swiss-Japanese Chamber of Commerce - SJCC event this week on "How Generative AI is Going to Change the World." Hosted by NTT DATA at The Circle Zurich Airport—a venue beautifully designed by Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto—the event was both enlightening and inspiring. Here are some key takeaways: ? NTT Group is one of the world's largest international companies, with NTT DATA offering significant services within the ICT market. The Managing Director's avatar, which greeted attendees in impeccable business Japanese, was both impressive and lifelike. ? Fascinating generative AI use cases were presented. The most striking for me was how the main speaker, the CTO, shared that his relative in her 80s uses AI to generate cooking recipes. If she can do it, so can I! ?? ? I appreciated NTT DATA's focus on the ethical implications of AI and their encouragement of AI use among employees. They recently surveyed their Swiss employees on AI use, and I am eager to read the report once it's finalized. Now, let’s go back to the discovery of the emoji! ?? As some of you may know, Japanese culture values politeness and maintaining harmonious emotions with those around you. There is even a whole polite business language called "keigo," which results in copious amounts of text. To convey these polite emotions ?? more efficiently and concisely, emojis were developed by an employee from Docomo (part of the NTT Group)! NTT recognizes the importance of language and culture even in technology—it has its proprietary Japanese Large Language Model (LLM) "tsuzumi." The event concluded with a Sushi Aperitif, providing ample networking opportunities and a chance to connect with others who speak Japanese or share an appreciation for Japanese culture ??.
