Today is Labor Thanksgiving Day (勤労感謝の日), celebrated on November 23rd every year in Japan! ???? It’s a national holiday where people express gratitude ?? to all workers for their contributions to society. ???????????????????? This holiday is derived from the ancient harvest festival known as Niiname-sai (新嘗祭) ??, which celebrates the first rice harvest of the year. ?? This ritual has been observed for centuries, beginning when rice became a staple of Japanese culture. ?? Originally, people gave thanks for the bountiful harvest and the farmers who worked hard to produce it. Over time, the holiday has evolved to honor the contributions of workers across all industries in Japan. ?? To celebrate Labor Thanksgiving Day, be sure to show your appreciation to the hard-working people around you! ???? #LaborThanksgivingDay #LaborAppreciationDay #勤労感謝の日 #Japan #JapaneseCulture #JapaneseHoliday #Niinamesai #ThankYou #JapanHouseLA #JHLA

This holiday season, discover how the beautiful and sustainable technique of furoshiki wrapping can elevate your gift-giving experience this December! ????? We're holding two sessions in early December to spotlight this versatile tradition of elegant gift wrapping, an eco-conscious alternative to disposable wrapping paper, perfect for creating memorable gifts for everyone on your list. ??? In previous furoshiki workshops, we've shown participants a style of wrapping used to create daily-use items like grocery and tote bags. This special holiday furoshiki workshop will explore the meaningful expression in the art of gift-giving, where the careful attention paid to wrapping speaks volumes about the giver’s feelings. ?? In a two-hour session led by expert instructor Kumi Corsa, participants will discover how a single piece of cloth can transform into endless possibilities for holiday gift presentation. The session begins with an introduction to furoshiki’s rich historical background and its role in Japanese gift-giving culture, where the art of wrapping represents a heartfelt dialogue between giver and receiver. ?? Each participant will receive their own 35-inch square furoshiki cloth to take home, empowering them to continue this sustainable practice throughout the holiday season and beyond. Join us on December 7th, 2024, at our Level 5 Salon. Session 1 will be held from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM and Session 2 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Tickets are $55.20 each. Our upcoming, free exhibition Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill and Spirit explores Japan’s master carpenters, known as daiku through the 5 pillars of daiku (carpenter) culture which we will introduce one by one. JOINERY | Japanese joinery often do not utilize nails or screws and instead cleverly crafts wood to slot together. The joinery techniques allow for “wiggle room” that absorbs the shocks of earthquakes and can be replaced or repaired allowing for more structural integrity to endure over the years. Experience the strength and beauty of Japanese joinery at our Masters of Carpentry exhibition, opening TOMORROW on November 20, 2024 at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles located at Ovation Hollywood.
