The samurai armor’s primary function is protecting the warrior wearing it, but it also served to reflect their own personal style through design. Learn more about the world of samurai and how they create their unique identity on the battlefield at NEO-JAPONISM | SAMURAI AND BEYOND: Exploring Tradition Through Technology! Available to view through our interactive 3DCG is the Armor (dōmaru) with “Eurasian Jay” Lacing, Red at Top, a piece from 15th century Muromachi period when the nation was plagued with civil war. The various motifs found on the armor symbolize the samurai’s wish for victory in battle. The front crest of the helmet (kabuto) represents deer antlers, which are considered messengers of the gods, bringing good fortune in battle. Other motifs are the lion and peony, respectively known as the “king of beasts” and “king of flowers.” The traditional braided, silk cords (kumihimo) in the back are made into thick, large knots called agemaki, symbolizing the unity of samurai. Don’t miss your chance to explore the other symbolism hidden in the armor and make your own customization by changing the lacking color with our interactive 3DCG rendering of the samurai armor. Due to the growing global popularity of Japanese samurai era culture – as witnessed in media such as FX’s “Shōgun” and Sony’s “Rise of the Ronin” video game – samurai culture is exploding in interest as visitors of Japan indulge in ancient traditions like katana swords. ?? However, swordsmiths are vanishing as more masters retire or pass away and apprentices require at least 5 years of training under a registered swordsmith and complete an internship. It's vital that young people feel inspired and interested in joining this trade to continue to pass down this knowledge to the next generation. Hirata Sukehira was an apprentice for 10 years and opened his workshop to create premium and durable swords using a rare type of steal called tamahagane. His wife, Hirata Nodoka, was so inspired by this material used that she became an apprentice to eventually become the only woman part of the mirage, a rare breed of artisans that was traditionally off limits to women. Watch this video to learn more about how this couple is keeping the traditional steel method of creating samurai swords alive! ?? https://bit.ly/42C1NSJ #JAPANHOUSELA #JHLANeoJaponism #Samurai #JapaneseTradition #Katana
