Today, the State of Oregon opened its search process for its new Trade Representative in Japan. This is one of the most consequential positions to drive the economic relationship between Oregon & Japan. If you are an experienced economic development professional with a deep knowledge of where opportunities lie to enhance trade and FDI, the State of Oregon would like to talk. https://lnkd.in/ga3VEGGk

As a part of our program working to connect business between Oregon and Japan, JASO spent time early this week introducing members from the Toyama Agricultural Cooperative to various food and beverage businesses here, and of course the Toyama Prefectural Govt representative, Mariko Taniguchi, who is here in Oregon for a year and works from the JASO office regularly.

over the past 18-24 months we’ve seen a certain coalescence around the term sub-national diplomacy for the work that we, the 39 japan america societies, and other sister organizations do. this is good, and important. it’s been noted that JASes sometimes have a hard time, or feel almost apologetic, about their value statements - what they bring to the community. but a true friend is powerful and meaningful. you always have to work to be a good friend. always. Andrew Wylegala Joshua Walker Ryan Shaffer Claudine Locascio Yoshi Domoto Steve Pollock Theresa Kulczak and other colleagues and connections understand this in their bones. diplomacy is a vocation at many levels, most beyond government.
Japan-U.S. Sister City Association and the U.S. Embassy Tokyo Unite to Enhance Japan-U.S. Subnational Diplomacy Tokyo Japan – September 3, 2024 – In an effort to foster peace and understanding between our nations, the Japan-United States Sister City Association (JUSSCA), chaired by actor and philanthropist Shin Koyamada (The Last Samurai), announced a special event aimed at strengthening the vital connections between Japan and the United States through over 450 existing sister city partnerships. Sister-city relationships serve as a cornerstone of citizen diplomacy, creating lasting bonds between communities around the world. Recognizing this, JUSSCA is thrilled to announce the launch of the JUSSCA Alumni (a new student exchange program), Subnational Diplomacy Grant, Japan-United States Leadership Summit, and annual conference initiatives specifically designed to strengthen people-to-people ties between Japan and US cities. The event on September 3rd, 2024, at the U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel’s residence brought together a diverse group of stakeholders invested in strengthening Japan-US relations, including Japanese governors and mayors, business executives, government officials, university presidents and community leaders from both Japan and the United States. “Relations between countries are built on relations between people. Through the more than 450 partnerships between cities across the United States and Japan, citizens, local leaders, and communities are forging friendships and deepening ties between our two nations,” said U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel. “What started as a peace initiative nearly 70 years ago has evolved into a program that empowers people, promotes business and educational exchange, and highlights the capacity of citizens and local communities to build bridges and bonds across borders and boundaries.” Shin Koyamada stated, “We are honored to launch the inaugural JUSSCA event in Japan, a platform dedicated to enhancing people-to-people ties. Our mission is to promote sister city partnerships, revitalize exchange programs, and connect leaders, especially focusing on strengthening youth connections between our two great nations at the subnational level.” The sister city program was instituted in the United States on September 11, 1956, at the White House Conference when then-U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed a national citizen diplomacy initiative. William Chou we'd love to hear your take on Seven & I Holdings move to be protected under "national security" and the ongoing US/Nippon Steel maneuvering. While not apples-to-apples, does the 7&i case not show that both sides equally are willing to reach for the cover of "nationalism" when they feel it suits? Or is there no comparison whatsoever?

well worth a visit if you are ever in new hampshire
Visiting Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a dream for any Japanese diplomat. The city holds historical significance for facilitating the peace treaty for the Russo-Japanese War of 1904. It was touching to see how history is preserved at the naval shipyard (where the negotiations took place) and by the people of Portsmouth (who promote citizen diplomacy).

great opportunity in the academic field of us-japan studies
For Asia regional folks, here's a fantastic opportunity at the The United States Army War College. Given the generational importance of the Indo-Pacific, this is a great opportunity to inform and engage with future Army and military leaders. My colleague Lami Kim was posted here previously, so there are some impressive shoes to fill!
