The last vintages in Beaujolais ranged from the cool and wet 2021 and 2024 to the very hot and dry 2020 and 2022, with 2019 and 2023 falling between those extremes. These climatic differences clearly marked the wines, though they don’t tell the full story of this beautiful hill country. Our Beaujolais 2025 Tasting Report highlights the extraordinarily rapid improvement in the quality of the region’s best wines over the past five years. Cesar Perrin welcomed Senior Editor Stuart Pigott and Tasting Manager Kevin Davy to Beaucastel's new winery. The range of wines from the Perrin family presented variety and freshness from the slopes of Gigondas, including the first vintage of their white, the altitude vineyards of Vinsobres showing brightness and balanced Vacqueyras. The iconic lineup of Chateau de Beaucastel stood out, with the Roussanne Vieilles Vignes impressing with its depth and texture. There was also a driven Chateauneuf-du-Pape red and white alongside an amazing 2023 Hommage à Jacques Perrin.

Bertani is set to release a limited series of older vintages, each bearing labels inspired by the political and cultural events of their respective decades. The project, titled 'Bertani On', took center stage at a spectacular tasting and dinner hosted by the three-Michelin-starred Le Calandre, which was attended by Senior Editor Aldo Fiordelli. The dinner featured Amarone vintages from 1967, 1975, 2005, and 2015 – the latter named James Suckling’s Wine of the Year.

Senior Editor Jacobo García Andrade recently visited El Bayeh in northern Argentina, where he discovered the captivating story behind their criolla wines. Owner and winemaker Daniel Mansur explained that their journey began serendipitously when they stumbled upon ancestral criolla vines while walking the land with winemaker Matías Michelini. A local radio call connected them with 46 producers and 60 small parcels of criolla chica and other varieties. These vineyards, some with vines over 150 years old, are reliant on a pre-Hispanic irrigation system. They produce light, translucent wines with vibrant acidity, enriching Argentina’s wine landscape. Because these grapes are an intrinsic part of the country’s history and contribute to a distinctive style of wine, they add diversity and depth to a landscape that is largely dominated by red varieties. In the group photo is Tomy Sempere, winemaker at El Bayeh, Don Pilo, owner of the namesake vineyard in the photos, Daniel Mansur, owner and winemaker of El Bayeh and Mattia Boschetto, assistant winemaker.

Fascinating to drink in Tokyo the Japanese pinot noir from the Burgundian family of De Montille. It’s from their vineyard in Hokkaido. I appreciated the wine’s clarity of fruit, definition and relatively low alcohol. #japanesewine #pinotnoir #redwine🍷
