Highland is a historic place that is tells the stories of 5th U.S. President James Monroe and the dozens of enslaved people who lived and worked on the property. Highland offers a collection of individual stories that comprise a complex and interconnected historical narrative of the emergence of the U.S. as a growing nation. James Monroe and his career in public service, the lives of enslaved men and women, and the operation of Highland all reflect arcs of early U.S. history, especially geopolitics, agriculture, and economics. Our work reflects transformative discoveries in archaeology and architectural history and is presented in self-guided exhibitions, guided history walks (seasonally), group visits, and public programs.

Energized with valuable, new insights and ideas at “Tourism for All,” a new program created by Destinations International, Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau & Tripadvisor. Businesses in the Charlottesville area completed this first-time pilot program designed to support CVBs and destination organizations in being more inclusive, welcoming and accessible to both prospective visitors and tourism businesses.
