?? “Culture is the forgotten, decisive factor when it comes to climate change.” – Dorine Dubois, UNESCO As Cop29 unfolds in Baku, a coalition of 40+ countries and 1,500+ civil society organizations is championing the formal inclusion of arts, culture, and heritage in global climate negotiations. A key example of culture driving innovation: the UAE’s pavilion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, led by architect Wael Al Awar, showcased eco-friendly cement made from recycled industrial waste brine. This creative solution has the potential to transform the construction industry—responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions. Beyond innovation, the arts inspire public action, fostering grassroots movements, behavioral change, and community mobilization for climate resilience. ?? Let’s champion culture as a driver of climate resilience and recovery. ?? Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gwaAszyk ?? Spotlight on Japan ?? ?? As global populations age, promoting later-life well-being is a major public health priority. Researchers from our Affiliate Lab at UCL, the Social Biobehavioural Research Group, utilized data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) to explore the effects of arts and cultural engagement on loneliness and social isolation in adults aged 65+ in Japan, one of the fastest-aging nations. Their findings reveal that older adults who maintained or increased engagement in arts and culture reported significantly lower levels of loneliness and isolation, with diverse, creative activities having the strongest impact. These insights suggest arts initiatives foster social connections and improve mental health, advocating for the integration of such programs into public health strategies. ?? Check out this vital research on the impact of social prescribing being led by Jameel Arts & Health Lab Affiliate Researcher and Steering Committee Chair, Daisy Fancourt at the Social Biobehavioural Research Group! #socialprescribing #artshealth #whocollaboratingcenter #healthequity
We're delighted to have published a groundbreaking new study ?? Read the first comprehensive analysis of #SocialPrescribing across diverse referral pathways in the UK, using data records provided by Access Elemental Social Prescribing ?? Prof Daisy Fancourt, lead author of the study,?stated: “There have been concerns that social prescribing is being given largely to people who are healthier and more affluent. But most previous studies have focused on small-scale local evaluation data or limited types of referrals like just those from GP practices. Our study takes the first broad view of?all types of referral pathways, including through primary care, social care, education, charities and self-referrals?and shows a much more positive picture." We hope to see you at tomorrow's Virtual Day for the National Organization for Arts in Health (US) The Jameel Arts & Health Lab will present the Hospital Murals Evaluation (HoME) project on November 12 from 1 - 1:40PM (New York). The session will be led by Nisha Sajnani, PhD RDT-BCT and Marcel Foster and will feature representatives from the international team of researchers. Session Description What can a hospital look like? This is the question at the heart of the Hospitals Mural Evaluation (HoME), a research project led by the Jameel Arts & Health Lab, which aims to better understand the impact of murals in hospitals and care settings. HoME involves collaboration between researchers in Slovenia, Nigeria, the UK, and the US. The project will lay the groundwork for future efforts to measure possible correlations between murals and workplace belonging for healthcare workers, perceived quality of care among patients, and the experience of healthcare facility visitors.
