关于我们
Jahn is among the most iconic names in architecture. Founded 60 years ago, our studio has reshaped cities and changed minds with a group of professionals sharing the same passion for architecture, design, and technology. Our approach is based on the principles of integrated design, cultural and site-specific research, and close collaboration with our clients and partners. Powered by the people and ideas it brings together, our work spans four continents and encompasses a range of typologies and scales. We come to the studio from different places and perspectives, equipped with multiple talents, abilities, and backgrounds. From our office in Chicago, our architects and designers collaborate with the most innovative engineers, fabricators, and builders to create architecture of authenticity and integrity. Through it all, we have never stopped changing. Inspired by the ideals embodied by our founders, Charles F. Murphy, Sr. and Helmut Jahn FAIA, we are just as restless and curious as we were in 1937. Today, our studio prizes a vibrant, diverse, and co-creative culture where ideas are ceaselessly tested and challenged. Guided by the veteran team of Evan Jahn, Philip Castillo FAIA, and Steven Cook FAIA, we have opened new paths of aesthetic and construction discovery, putting to use the most current materials and research available. The result is a body of work that speaks for itself, addressing urban responsibility, performance, engineering synthesis, attention to detail, and sustainability by design. We are a group of doers, darers, designers that are grounded in our values, unbounded by convention and energized by the future. Having trust in our creativity, and by allowing space for experimentation, we believe we can design a better world.

How do buildings celebrate Halloween? Some get decorated. Some decay, embracing their spooky charm. Others hide in plain sight. Located in Hyde Park, the University of Chicago chiller plant takes a utilitarian structure and "dresses" it up as a sophisticated, modern glass building. The transparency doesn’t disguise its function, but the glass facade "masks" its true use by creating a reflective surface. Topping it all off is a clever "trick" — an extended perforated metal parapet that helps the building blend seamlessly with the rest of the campus. We hope this building doesn't send "chills" down your spine — after all, it's all about keeping things cool. Happy Halloween — from all of us at Jahn. May your disguises be elegant, your surprises delightful, and your structures stand strong. #jahnarch #happyhalloween

Philip Castillo, FAIA, recently participated in a panel discussion about emerging trends in high-rise design during Chicago Build Expo, the Midwest's largest construction showcase. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, with a particular focus on sustainability and its applications to existing structures. Castillo highlighted how our firm’s reimagining of the James R. Thompson Center exemplifies innovative approaches to addressing the needs of our current built environment. By emphasizing sustainability through renovation, buildings can be thoughtfully adapted to meet modern environmental standards while preserving their architectural significance. Thank you to our friends at Chicago Build for inviting us to participate. #JahnArch #chicagobuild #construction

Earlier this year, filmmaker Nathan Eddy released “The Dream Was What Mattered,” a stunning 8-minute portrait of the James R. Thompson Center. Through sweeping drone footage and archival materials, Eddy meticulously documents the building’s public spaces and lesser-known corners — from its spacious atrium to its mechanical rooms — in the months before construction began on the redevelopment of this iconic building. 2025 will mark 40 years since the Thompson Center first opened as the State of Illinois Center. Although it sparked much conversation and debate at the time, it proved to be a game changer for our firm — a building that allowed us to test new ideas and push the boundaries of what a government building should be. A building for the people, by the people. In anticipation of this milestone year, we’ve explored our own archives to uncover rare images that memorialize our firm’s approach to the Thompson Center’s original design. We look forward to sharing this content with you over the coming months. In the meantime, we invite you to experience “The Dream Was What Mattered,” a film by Nathan Eddy, to understand the building as it was originally designed:

We're proud of our own Lynda Dossey, AIA, 2024 president of AIA Chicago, for her inspiring leadership at AIA's Women’s Leadership Summit (WLS) earlier this month. Founded by The American Institute of Architects (AIA), the WLS brings together the industry’s largest network of women who are breaking down barriers, making themselves visible, and manifesting the careers they want — while making a difference in the world. Go, Lynda! ?? #AIAWLS #JahnArch
Feeling energized after sharing the stage today with these incredible leaders at the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Women’s Leadership Summit. If there was a word bubble made from our panel, these words would be the boldest: unapologetic, audacious, tenacity, elevate, equity, community, storytelling. These are my kind of people! Thanks for the opportunity to collaborate. Let’s keep it going at the National Building Museum Kimberly Dowdell Pascale Sablan FAIA,NOMA,LEED AP Lynda Dossey, AIA Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE Jennifer Park #AIAWLS

It was a great opportunity to use one of the many spacious and well-appointed amenity areas at #1000M last week for the ULI panel discussion featuring our Philip Castillo among others who were instrumental in bringing this market-shaping project to completion. It take a dedicated team to realize an architects vision and we are fortunate to have a great team of partners who never waivered from delivering a remarkable building. Thank you for opportunity ULI Chicago to share the experience of bringing this great building to life with your members.
Last night ULI hosted an event at 1000M with the brilliant leaders + project team that brought this magical structure to life: ? Jordan Karlik |?Principal, JK Equities ? Philip Castillo |?Executive VP & Managing Director, Jahn/ ? Shaylyn Cullen |?President, Cullen Construction Management ? David Steffenhagen |?Project Executive, McHugh Construction To those who attended the panel to learn about this architectural feat designed by the renowned late Helmut Jahn - thank you. Those who came not only learned about the project process, but were also fortunate enough to tour this impeccable luxury rental located in the South Loop. The views and the amenities of this distinguished residential property leave those who witness it speechless, and last night was no exception. #GeneralContractor #SouthLoop #1000M #highrise #skyscraper #luxuryliving #Chicago Special thanks to Philip Castillo (Jahn/), Jordan Karlik (JK Equities), David Steffenhagen (McHugh Construction), and Shaylyn Cullen (Cullen Construction Management). As construction on the redevelopment of the James R. Thompson Center progresses, more of the original structure is revealed, offering a rare opportunity to see this familiar building through a completely new lens. The Chicago Tribune Editorial Board documented this in an editorial published yesterday, titled "Thanks to Google, Chicago has an amazing new tourist attraction. Temporarily." We're glad that others are appreciating the unique glimpse it provides — not just into the building itself, but into many of our core design principles as a studio, which we continue to practice every day. ?? https://buff.ly/3ZTVEjI ??: Rainer Viertlb?ck

We’re honored to see the Pritzker Military Archives Center featured in two prominent publications in recent weeks: Fast Company and Dezeen. “The whole point of this building, as refined as it looks, had to do with this kind of toughness, like it was a piece of military equipment,” says managing director Philip Castillo.
