Karen was born half deaf and although she had a surgical procedure that helped her initially, over the years her close family still felt she needed further assistance. Since we first fitted Karen with hearing aids over a decade ago, Karen hasn’t just embraced the basic capabilities of her hearing aids; she’s also explored the apps and features that they can support. “I have an iPhone, along with the ReSound Smart 3D app, and Marcie can tweak my hearing aids, using that, from her office,” she says. “I also love the fact that I can use them to listen to my music – either on Amazon or iTunes.” ?? #PatientStory #JacobsAudiology #MarylandHearingCare

This month is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. Studies have suggested a link between hearing loss and some cognitive issues, including dementia and Alzheimer's. In fact, hearing loss can be a very early symptom of Alzheimer's and it's suggested that middle-aged people with hearing loss may be up to five times more likely to have dementia than those without hearing loss. SaWan found out she had a hearing loss in her late twenties, after a flight to Italy. She had gone there for work but once she landed, both her eardrums had ruptured. She was told overseas that there wasn't much they could do, and had to fly home before her ears were fully healed. She soon found out that she’d need hearing aids for the rest of her life, which she acknowledges was difficult. She said, “To lose your hearing at my age has a stigma attached to it. People see you wearing hearing aids, and they either make fun of you or they treat you differently.” Over the years, she said that she went to places where she paid too much money for hearing aids, and in some cases, couldn’t hear anything out of the devices! When she came to our clinic, we worked hard to help her hearing and remove that stigma. She recalls that Marcie "was the first to help me see that having hearing aids is the same as wearing glasses. In case you haven't heard, there are rumors around suggesting that Apple’s next update, iOS 18, will include a new feature called “Hearing Aid Mode.” Apparently, this new feature will focus on allowing Apple AirPods users to use their earphones as sound amplifiers.
