Supporting those working boldly toward a healthy environment, reproductive justice and the nurture of nature
关于我们
The Jacob and Terese Hershey Foundation envisions a world where people and nature live in harmony and good health. The Jacob and Terese Hershey Foundation is a private philanthropic grantmaking foundation dedicated to environmental justice; the health of the public, climate, air, water, and nature; reproductive justice; and the interdependent relationship between humans, public parks and open spaces, nature, and the environment. The Foundation primarily supports work in and around the Houston and Austin regions, as well as across Texas on issues of statewide significance. Our priority areas have guided the Foundation since they were laid out by our founders, Jacob W. and Terese T. Hershey, at the Foundation’s inception in 1961. Throughout this time, the Foundation has remained committed to its priorities, taken on historic battles, and supported small teams with big punch with unwavering determination. Our decision-making is rooted in the following values: People - We value the dignity, experience and worth of every person, especially the people whose well-being is at stake. Nature - We respect the vitality of nature, open spaces and the many species they home, especially when under threat. Harmony - We affirm the interdependent relationship between people and nature. Equity & Justice - We act knowing that many power structures were designed to favor some and disadvantage others. We embrace both systems change and harm repair. Bold Action - We believe that taking risks can lead to transformative change. Our Board: Jeffrey Hershey, President Dr. Andrew Sansom, Treasurer Amie Rodnick, Secretary Dr. Kimberly Baker Dr. Olive Hershey Dr. Bakeyah Nelson Angelica Razo Our Staff: Elizabeth Love, CEO Julia Gutierrez, Executive Assistant Alan Chang, Director of Finance Deborah Mueller, Director of Operations and Grants Management Carolina Salmeron, Program Officer

We appreciate our partner the Texas Health and Environment Alliance for prompting the state's study that confirmed higher-than-expected rates of many forms of cancer in a large swath of east Harris County, and continuing to push for full remediation of the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site. https://lnkd.in/g6Eehb6d

Kudos to our partner Public Health Watch for the launch of "Fumed," a powerful new podcast series about people living in the shadows of chemical plants and refineries. The first season focuses on leaders in Channelview, a tight-knit community in east Harris County that is close to our hearts. https://lnkd.in/gApq89kr T7H5f0WixFh8v1wPwQfZ?go=1&sp_cid=47ce0b0a42346bfab4c44911b84c78b2&utm_source=embed_player_p&utm_medium=desktop&nd=1&dlsi=cae7a5ea935d4d45

Check out this podcast our partner Deceleration posted featuring Dave Cortez, Director of the Lone Star Chapter Sierra Club, for an excellent perspective on what's needed to organize our communities to stay safe in a "world on fire." https://lnkd.in/gyDX4_Ha

Dear federal workers: We appreciate you. Also, there are lots of great opportunities for you here in Texas. For example, we're proud to support a new role at Public Citizen that's aiming to keep close tabs on our state environmental regulator. Check it out and share widely! https://lnkd.in/gv2dUFUQ

Kudos to our partner Commission Shift for calling out the Railroad Commission of Texas for sidestepping responsibility for aging, leaky oil wells, and calling for a long-term strategy to deal with these potential sources of groundwater contamination. https://lnkd.in/gG4wMKZF

Join us February 5 at Houston's DeLuxe Theater for the premiere of our partner Counterstream Media's documentary "Solidarity Ride: Convergence, Resurgence, Healing & Justice," highlighting the stories of changemakers in the Gulf South and Appalachia fighting environmental injustices in their communities. https://lnkd.in/g_7RFSjn

Appreciating the collaboration between our partner Public Health Watch and Univision 45, including this deep dive into the unacceptably high airborne levels of benzene in the Channelview community. https://lnkd.in/gDueQR9p
