  • The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by U.S. President Donald Trump, designating every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This special day joins six other military-centric annual observances codified in Title 4 of the United States Code, among them Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day. March 29 is a fitting choice for a day honoring Vietnam veterans. It was chosen to be observed in perpetuity as March 29, 1973, was the day United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished and also the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. In addition, on and around this same day, Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war. The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration honors all veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time from Nov. 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, regardless of location, and their families. Nov. 1, 1955, was selected to coincide with the official designation of Military Assistance Advisory Group-Vietnam (MAAG-V). May 15, 1975, marks the end of the battle precipitated by the seizure of the SS Mayaguez. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that today, there are between 6 and 7 million U.S. Vietnam veterans living in America and abroad along with millions of families of those who served during this time frame. U.S. involvement in Vietnam started slowly with an initial deployment of advisers in the early 1950s, grew incrementally through the early 1960s and expanded with the deployment of full combat units in July 1965. The last U.S. personnel were evacuated from Vietnam in April 1975. This national commemoration was authorized by Congress, established under the secretary of defense and launched by the president to thank and honor our nation’s Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. • Four new Seymour Community School Corp. administrators (Seymour Admin) took tours of two local industries, Dicksons Inc. and Nippon Steel Pipe America Inc., on Thursday morning. Dicksons is in the Freeman Field Industrial Park and Nippon Steel is in the Eastside Industrial Park in Seymour. Each year, new administrators with the corporation take tours of local businesses and industries to gain an understanding of what they do and what opportunities there are for students.

  • #FunFactFriday A facility was built in 1957 in Medora to house United Plastics Company Inc. In its early years, the factory employed as many as 800 people, but the plant had around 140 when it closed in December 1988. Before closing, the plant changed ownership several times. The most recent owner, G.L. Industries of Michigan Inc., purchased it in June 1986. Other owners were ITT Corp. and F.L. Industries. Beginning in 1965, the facility was used to produce plastic parts and conduct metal plating by Amerace Corp. One of the reasons the factory closed was related to environmental issues, but by 1998, sampling of materials, soil and water at the site came back fine. We’re stamping history—literally. Our SUTHERLAND PRESSES just stamped the first U.S.-made top tube from high-quality steel, right here in Seymour, Indiana. This marks another huge step in our journey to bring bike manufacturing back to the USA—four precision-formed tubes at a time. With advanced automation, laser cutting, robotic welding, and now in-house stamping, we’re proving that reshoring isn’t just possible—it’s powerful. The machines are humming. The sparks are flying. The movement is real. Let’s ride—American manufacturing is rolling forward. • #ThrowbackThursday Indiana Lt. Gov. Frank O'Bannon addresses the crowd at the grand opening celebration of Seymour Tubing Inc. on April 26, 1990, at the new plant in Seymour's Eastside Industrial Park. Other speakers included Michael Sayre, personnel manager for Seymour Tubing; Seymour Mayor Bill Bailey; Tetsuo Itahashi, president of Nippon Pipe Manufacturing Co. Ltd.; Haruhiko Shibuya, consul general of Japan; Shojiro Arita, executive managing director of Mitsui and Co. Ltd.; Mary Lou Taulbee, manufacturing specialist for Seymour Tubing; and the Rev. George Bennett of Central Christian Church, who gave the invocation. During the ceremony, it was announced that the company — a joint venture of Nippon Pipe Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Sumitomo Metal Industries Inc. Ltd. and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. — decided to proceed immediately with its Phase 2 expansion project, which would add 40 more jobs. Also during the ceremony, music was provided by the Seymour High School band, directed by Steve McGrew, and company officials announced a gift of six flowering cherry trees to the city as a symbol of unity and growth. The trees were planted at Gaiser Park, Shields Park and SHS. Bailey presented the company president with an aerial photograph of the plant as a gift from the city. Following ribbon-cutting ceremonies, invited guests were taken on a tour of the new facility, where steel tubing for the automotive industry was made. Source: The Jackson County Banner

  • #WorkforceWednesday Social Work Month in March is a time to celebrate the great profession of social work. According to the National Association of Social Workers, the theme for Social Work Month 2025 is "Social Work: Compassion + Action." Social workers are everywhere — in our communities, hospitals, the halls of Congress, local governments, corporations, social service agencies, veterans’ centers, schools, sporting institutions and more. They’re also in demand. By 2033, more than 836,000 social workers will be employed in the United States. Social workers undergo years of schooling and training, gaining the expertise needed to support communities and individuals and help them reach their full potential. They excel at meeting people where they are and provide compassionate guidance and help. They care about people. That is why so many people enter social work each year, making it one of the fastest growing professions in the United States. The 2025 theme for Social Work Month was chosen because in the weeks and months ahead, social workers will be called to turn their compassion into action to help the nation address a variety of societal challenges. Social workers also are on the forefront of helping the nation address a mental health and substance use disorder crisis and chronic income inequality that has led to rising homelessness. The theme also focuses on the need for social workers to take care of themselves. Just as airlines instruct passengers to put on their own oxygen masks before helping others in an emergency, social workers must prioritize compassion for themselves to effectively support those in need.
