We had a fantastic time at the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce Health and Wellness Summit yesterday! Every year, this event features insightful discussions on various health topics, wellness in our community, and updates from local healthcare leaders, including Mark Baker, CEO of Hughston. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Hughston was honored to present research at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the European Bone & Joint Infection Society in September in Barcelona, Spain, among the global experts in orthopaedic infection research. Kyle Cichos, PhD presented a poster (senior author, Dr. Eric Westerlund) titled 45S5 Bioglass Graft Decreases Surgical Site Infection after Posterior TLIF Reconstruction Compared to Alternative Graft Materials. This study compared 45S5 bioglass bone graft material to non-bioglass materials for spinal fusion. Bioglass has antimicrobial properties in-vitro so we aimed to see if that translated into decreased SSI after posterior lumbar spinal fusions. We found bioglass use resulted in 5 times decreased risk of SSI compared to non-bioglass grafts without compromising fusion rates. Hughston continues to be committed to being a leader in orthopaedic innovation and patient care. This work further supports our commitment to this mission and to pushing the field forward for prevention of postoperative infection.
