On October 27, 1904 the New York City Subway began operation and after 120 years, it is now the largest transportation system in the world! We here at JBC are proud to be a small part of what keeps the system running (and look good). At almost 200 stations and counting, we've seen just about every style of station, every mosaic, and every wall tile variation you can name. And we hope to help the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to keep the system running for another 120 years! Happy Anniversary NYC Subway! Enjoy the images of just some of the stations we've worked on. If you can name them all, you might be an honorary JBC employee. :) #JBC #MTA #120yearsofthenycsubway #NYC #preservation

JBC is happy to have played an important role in the restoration of the Nivola Horses at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)'s Wise Towers. It was a long process with its fair share of ups and downs. But, in the end, the smiles and pride of the residents makes all the hard work worthwhile! #nivolahorses #NYCHA #JBC #Preservation #Conservation
Earlier this year, the iconic Nivola Horses made their long-awaited return to New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)'s Wise Towers, much to the delight of residents who cherish these beloved sculptures. ????? The horses, crafted by the late Italian artist Costantino Nivola in 1964, have been a central part of Wise Towers' cultural fabric for decades, serving as both a neighborhood landmark and a cherished playground memory for many. The journey to restore the Nivola Horses was not without its challenges. Over the years, the statues had suffered from vandalism and neglect, prompting concerns about their preservation. In 2021, they were removed due to repairs needed on a water main line beneath their location. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the PACT Renaissance Collaborative (PRC) and the Wise Towers Resident Association, the horses have been beautifully restored and are once again a symbol of the community's resilience and pride. As part of the #PACT program, Wise Towers underwent comprehensive upgrades, including the full restoration of the Nivola art pieces. Residents were also given the opportunity to learn more about the artwork and its significance through trips to the Magazzino Italian Art Museum, fostering a deeper connection to their community's heritage. "The horses are part of the legacy of this development," said Ernesto Carrera, President of the Wise Towers Resident Association. "[...] They’ve brought us together and shown us the importance of preserving our heritage. They symbolize our history and resilience." The revitalized plaza, which now features a new playground, basketball court, and mural, continues to be a gathering place for residents of all ages. As Wise Towers resident Lovely Joseph puts it, "They’re not just statues; they’re part of our identity here." A thousand thank yous to Mary Jablonski and each of the inspiring authors who contributed to this book. Never thought I’d have my name on a cover ??
Hot of the Press! Archetype Publications Ltd recently released "Examining the Built World through Architectural Finishes." EverGreene's Brooke Russell, Senior Conservator was a co-editor with Mary Jablonski of Jablonski Building Conservation, Inc.. The papers in this volume were presented at the 7th International #ArchitecturalFinishesResearch (AFR) Conference held virtually in Tel Aviv in 2021. They provide ample evidence of the importance of research into contemporary and historic finishes in expanding our comprehension of the built environment. Senior Associate Ed Fitzgerald gets special mention for his expert contribution in cleaning the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Thank you PROSOCO, Inc. If you haven't already, this is your sign to take a walk on the beautiful historic bridge and check out the brighter and cleaner stone towers up close in person! #BrooklynBridge #PROSOCO #JablonskiBuildingConservation #JBC #stonecleaning #conservation #historicpreservation
Think you would notice if a 278-foot-tall granite tower in your neighborhood changed color overnight? An award-winning restoration of the Brooklyn Bridge was certainly not done overnight (it lasted from 2020 to 2023), but due to Covid, not as many people noticed its transformation as decades' worth of carbon and dirt were removed from the historic granite towers and its original (much lighter) colors were revealed. In addition to comments from Ed FitzGerald of Jablonski Building Conservation (JBC), Jacqueline Bascetta of Pullman, and Charles (Chas) Finch of Pullman, our story contains lots more photos, project details, New Yorkers' reactions, and the system Pullman designed to not let one drop of anything fall into the East River. https://hubs.ly/Q02F8vX90 Photos courtesy Edward FitzGerald, Charles Finch and Brandon Neubauer #BrooklynBridge #Pullman #JablonskiBuildingConservation #NewYorkCityArchitecture #NewYorkCity #BridgeCleaning #HeavyDutyRestorationCleaner #YouUsTheProject #WeCanCleanThat

JBC is proud to have worked on the project!
We reintroduce Michigan Central Station. Detroit has saved its equivalent to the Cathedral of Notre Dame. While not ravaged by fire, Michigan Central experienced destruction by vandalism and water to the point of nearly being lost forever. Thanks to Ford Motor Company and Michigan Central for trusting Christman/BRINKER to lead the construction trades for this world class restoration effort. We also couldn't have done it without the incredible trade partners, including: Benkari; Allen Architectural Metals; Amalio Corp; Atsalis Bros.; BDN Industrial Hygiene Consultants, Inc.; Blaze Contracting, Inc.; Grunwell-Cashero; Boston Valley Terra Cotta; Quinn Evans; Capital Stoneworks ; JP Phillips Inc; CASS Sheetmetal; Commercial Contracting Corporation; Christman Constructors, Inc.; Conti LLC; Curtis Glass; Denn-Co Construction, Inc.; KONE; Edwards Glass; Empire Tile; Eugenio Painting; EverGreene Architectural Arts, Inc.; Glassline; Graciano Corporation; HOMRICH; Ideal Contracting; Industrial Fence; Jablonski Building Conservation, Inc.; W.J. What a labor of love this project was! So proud of all the hard work from our many collaborators and colleagues from design through construction who helped make this happen! We hope you'll all have the opportunity to see a fantastic show at the Palace Theatre (and maybe also admire the beautiful work around you before the curtain goes up)!
After 7 years as the Project Manager and Preservation Architect for the restoration and lift of the Palace Theatre, it is a joy to see the fruits of our labor beautifully recorded by The New York Times. Congratulations to all involved! I am specially thankful to the core team who worked incredibly hard by my side to design and execute this project to perfection. Special thanks to my colleagues Kyle Normandin, Thomas Kuczynski, Tiffany Szeles, PhD at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.., the team at PBDW Architects, Jennifer Kearney at Jablonski Building Conservation, Inc., EverGreene Architectural Arts, Inc.
