?? Graduate student spotlight ?? Doctoral student Emily Payne has authored a paper in the journal IEEE Access! ?? Her paper was published through the BiSSL group in the J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Multidisciplinary Engineering from a collaborative grant with Sandia National Laboratories and Dr. Katherine Rogers Davis’ group in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Texas A&M University. Emily's research explores the vulnerabilities in modern power systems due to interdependencies between physical, cyber-physical, and cyber devices. The findings reveal that tripartite network models offer deeper insights into indirect interactions for an enhanced understanding of systemic resilience under denial-of-service scenarios. On this #VeteransDay, we honor the unwavering spirit of Aggie veterans, including one of our distinguished former students, Gerry Grogin '48, the last surviving participant of the historic 1946 Aggie Muster on Corregidor Island. Born in Bryan, Texas, Gerry’s roots in Texas A&M run deep. After joining the Army Air Corps during WWII, his service as a cryptographer and later participation in the legendary Corregidor Muster exemplify the resilience and unity of the Aggie spirit. Upon returning home, Gerry pursued his passion for mechanical engineering, shaping a remarkable career in the HVAC industry. At 98, Gerry continues to inspire future generations, serving as both a successful engineer and a generous supporter of the J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering. His advice to Aggie engineers is simple yet profound: “Stay the course and keep your mind open, because in mechanical engineering, there’s so much to be learned.” Today, we salute Gerry and all veterans for their service and dedication. Thank you for your sacrifice and contributions to our nation and our university. #tamuMEEN

We are thrilled to spotlight Ammar Waheed, a Ph.D. student at Texas A&M University, and the first U.S. PhD student to receive funding from the U.K.’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), an executive agency of the Ministry of Defence. Ammar’s groundbreaking research is advancing autonomous robotics by addressing one of the field's toughest challenges: the simulation-to-reality (Sim2Real) gap, ensuring reliable performance in both simulated and real-world environments. This collaboration underscores the strong ties between Texas A&M and DSTL, embodying a shared commitment to pushing technological boundaries with ethical standards in autonomous defense. Working with Dr. Zohaib Hasnain and Michael Walsh at Texas A&M’s StarLab, Ammar is developing scalable, versatile control systems for mobile robotic platforms. Through the use of Physics-Informed Neural Networks, he’s creating resilient, cost-effective systems capable of navigating diverse terrains and applications across both defense and civilian sectors. We're thrilled to share Alex Aguilar's experience as a Capstone Design sponsor in the J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University. Alex is a Research Scientist Manager at Nova Ltd. who learned about our Capstone Design where students work together to define solutions to real-world industry problems and then implement them. ?? Sponsorship involves providing project funding, an open-ended design problem, and mentorship to guide the students as they turn concepts into real-world solutions. Spring 2025 project commitments are due by November 15—Fall 2025 options are also available. "I was so impressed by Senior Capstone the program that I immediately volunteered to become a mentor. Back at the office, I pitched the idea to Nova’s HR and management, and they were very supportive. They even decided to sponsor the team I’m mentoring. My role involves defining the problem they need to solve and supporting them through every stage. The experience is incredibly fulfilling--it’s so rewarding to see the students grow and develop their knowledge and skills."
