In the wake of the tragic plane crash in Washington, DC, we should be focused on mourning the lives lost and supporting grieving families. Instead, baseless accusations have emerged, falsely linking diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts and persons with disabilities to the cause of the crash. These claims have no foundation in fact. They are not only egregiously false but also deeply harmful, diverting attention from real solutions and the needs of those affected. This moment calls for leadership, not opportunistic scapegoating. Leadership is about truth, integrity, and the courage to stand up to misinformation. It is about insight and speaking truth to power, not scoring political points at the expense of the world’s largest minority and the principles of kindness, empathy, and decency. People with disabilities represent over 1.6 billion individuals worldwide, a community of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders who contribute to every industry, including aviation. To suggest otherwise is not just wrong; it undermines the very fabric of inclusion that strengthens organizations and society. We must ask ourselves: What kind of leadership do we want to see in the world? Leadership that leans into fear and division, or leadership that upholds dignity, evidence, and respect?
