As Ahern marks 145 years, we’re looking back at the pivotal moments that helped shape our company’s legacy—decisions that fueled growth, innovation, and long-term success. In 1945, Ahern experienced a surge in momentum, with company revenues tripling. Tom and Don reinvested in the business, purchasing large trucks and new equipment to support expansion and meet growing demand. By the 1950s, Ahern’s impact could be seen across job sites, with cranes hard at work—a sign of the company’s continued evolution. The next generation stepped in to carry the legacy forward. In 1957, Tom’s son, Michael, joined the company, followed by Don’s son, John Jr., in 1959, taking on the management of Peerless Milling Company. These milestones reflect Ahern’s ongoing commitment to progress—building on a foundation of hard work, reinvestment, and family leadership. As we recognize 145 years of Ahern’s history, we look back to where it all began—with David Ahern, a skilled tradesman who immigrated from County Cork, Ireland, to Wisconsin in the mid-1800s. With a passion for plumbing, steam, and gas pipefitting, David and his sons established D. Ahern & Son in 1880 in Fond du Lac, setting the foundation for the company we know today. At a time when indoor plumbing was still a luxury and heating technology was evolving, David saw the opportunity to bring essential services to a growing community. His commitment to quality craftsmanship and innovation helped shape Ahern’s legacy as an industry leader.
