Vesicant drugs with high or low pH levels can be extremely dangerous when administered through a peripheral IV. Imagine putting soda into your vein or even worse stomach acid and bleach. When these vesicants infiltrate, patients are at risk for severe injuries, even in the smallest amounts of fluid. Hourly checks are simply not enough.
