Our People pillar is central to our Positive Pawprint sustainability strategy and ensures that we continue to take action that makes our workplaces welcoming, inclusive, and supportive for everyone. Within this, our diversity and inclusion strategy drives change across six key areas, including our IVC Evidensia UK Ethnic Diversity Scholarship, which has supported 55 scholars since 2021 with financial aid, mentorship, and networking opportunities. We're also supporting initiatives to increase diversity in agriculture. UK Regional Head of Farm Navaratnam Partheeban OBE developed AgDiversity, an online course launched by the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust to challenge farming stereotypes and encourage greater inclusion. As he puts it: "We need to make agriculture a space where everyone can belong and thrive, and this course is the start of that journey." • How can we inspire more students to become farm vets. There are a number of barriers that make it more difficult for aspiring farm students to experience great farm EMS, and the risk is that students will “self-select” early on and both they, and the profession, will miss out. IVC farm boot camps are just one example of how we are trying to face into this challenge. IVC Evidensia UK IVC Evidensia #teamfarm

How can we make farm EMS placements more inspiring and accessible for all? asks Paul Horwood in an opinion article in our current issue of Vet Record. Explaining that many students are opting not to see farm practice at all during their degree due to a number of different barriers, he outlines some suggested changes that practices, universities and the RCVS can make to improve the quality and accessibility of farm EMS, and encourage the next generation to undertake placements and be inspired to join sector ?????? Planting Seeds for a Brighter Future This Festive Season Supporting the local community is at the heart of what we do. So we’re really proud that our UK Farm Vets team has donated £2,000 to Farms for City Children through our Community Grant Fund. This donation will help fund vital programs that allow children and young people from disadvantaged communities to step away from life’s challenges and learn new skills. It helps them build their confidence, build a sense of connection to the environment around them and truly thrive. Susannah Mair, Corporate Fundraising Manager at the charity, shared her gratitude: “This contribution sustains our mission and marks the beginning of what we hope will be a long-term partnership. We’re excited about opportunities to connect marginalised young people to careers in agriculture and beyond. This generosity makes a real difference.” We are delighted to support a cause that transforms lives and plants seeds of hope for the future. Navaratnam Partheeban OBE, Regional Head of Farm and passionate diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) advocate is spearheading a groundbreaking step in fostering diversity in agriculture. He has launched AgDiversity, the UK’s first bespoke DEI course for the UK agricultural sector. The course builds on his research through the Nuffield Farming Scholarship, where he explored barriers and opportunities for increasing representation of Black and People of Colour (BPOC) in agriculture. “IVC Evidensia Farm Vets has committed to getting everyone in this side of the business to do the course,” said Navaratnam. “We will be leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion and show the sector how an organisation can fully embrace this.” The course aims to address a pressing challenge: while BPOC individuals make up 17% of the UK population, they represent only 1% of the agricultural workforce. Reflecting on his journey, Navaratnam shared: “From university on, I was almost always the only person like me. Farm vetting was very isolated, and I reached a point where no matter my experience, people judged my abilities based on how I looked.” AgDiversity is designed to break down barriers. This accessible online course offers practical insights into DEI with three short modules and includes a certificate upon completion. Participants can also join the AgDiversity Participant Database, signalling their commitment to diversity in agriculture. “We need a sector that makes young, diverse talent feel like they belong. If that doesn’t happen, we won’t recruit or retain the vets we need,” Navaratnam explained. “I’m delighted that IVC Evidensia is at the forefront of bringing about that change.” #AgDiversity #IVCEvidensia #DEI #FarmVet #Inclusion #DiversityMatters #ChangingAgriculture

  • Last week our Midlands practices ran a brilliant 5 days EMS Bootcamp, specifically aimed at inspiring future farm vets. With sessions on blood sampling, injection technique, Alpaca medicine, castrations, disbudding and post-mortems, this gave dedicated time and case load to allow the students to practice and fine-tune their techniques.

Our profession can be hard at times, and it can be difficult to see the wood from the trees, but then you get involved in something that really lifts you up again, and makes you remember what's great about being a vet. Farm EMS is really vital to ensure vet students are motivated and inspired to come and join the "best" ?? sector!! The amount of exposure to farm work in Uni is less than it was, and getting a placment in a Farm Practice is hard, with fewer farm practices, and many more students than in previous decades. Also seasonality means that sometimes there is just not the case load. To help address this, last week we ran a Farm EMS Bootcamp. Organised and run by Gill Whitehurst, with support from Hugh Thomson and Navaratnam Partheeban OBE, 3rd and 4th year students came and practiced some of the key practical skills needed as a Day1/Month1 farm vet. From blood sampling, injection techniques, castrations, disbudding, post-mortems and feet, it was 5 days of in depth, practical skills. And the engagement and the subsequent feedback has been lovely. #farmvets #teamfarm #ems #vetstudent #farmbootcamp
