Why I continue to support InChI and the InChI Trust Part I: A success story of explaining a nerdy endeavor to a lay audience Recently, I have passed on the baton as Springer Nature's representative on the board of the InChI Trust to my colleague Sharon George. However, I will continue to support the InChI mission as a volunteer for the Trust. Why on earth do I do that? This is a question that some weeks ago I discussed with family and friends, an audience that is rather remote from this somewhat nerdy endeavor. I am sharing my experience with that discussion here not just for my fellow InChI nerds, but perhaps even for the benefit of the wider #chemistry and molecular sciences communities. Unsurprisingly, the discussion started with the question: What is an InChI? So, I explained that this is a machine-readable representation of a chemical structure according to a standard set by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the InChI Trust, called the IUPAC International Chemical Identifier, or InChI for short. Aha. I guess I was on the brink of losing the interest and attention of my audience. But politely they asked: What makes chemical structures so important? I had not prepared in any way for this discussion. There I was having to answer that question. Spontaneous inspiration suggested to talk about the Thalidomide scandal. Roughly around the year 1960, a German pharma company marketed a sleeping pill based on the compound Thalidomide. Under the trade name Contergan, this was deemed to be particularly useful for pregnant women. The chemical structure of Thalidomide has a property called handedness. This means that there are two distinct chemical structures of this compound, one being the mirror image of the other, like the left hand is the mirror image of the right hand. No matter how you move, turn or chop-off your hands – you will always be able to tell one from the other. For many chemical compounds, their chemical structure and respective mirror images are identical. This is not the case for Thalidomide. Tragically, only one form of Thalidomide has the desired effects of a sleeping pill. Its mirror image has lethal or severely damaging effects on fetuses. As sold at the time, the drug included both forms. This only became apparent after more and more babies were born with deformities. My audience got it. Even without a strong inclination towards chemistry, they understood why chemical structures are important. Sometimes vitally important. And they understood that in this era of digitization, the computers and robots need to get this right, too. They understood why I continue to support InChI as a nerdy volunteer. This story has an epilogue. Only after this discussion with family and friends, I suddenly remembered that once I had a brother. I do not remember himself, as he only lived for a few months before I was born. My mother used Contergan when pregnant with my brother. He was called Steffen.

Members of our team recently got together to mark The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Global Women’s Get Together and International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Founded in 1919, IUPAC is an authority on digital standards in chemistry, chemical nomenclature and terminology, creating the common language of chemistry for more than a century. This event was a powerful moment to reflect on what it’s like to be a woman in science, to acknowledge the barriers we may face and to explore where they stem from. The conversations were not only eye-opening but also a chance to pause, connect and share experiences with one another. A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise this enriching session and to all our amazing teammates who participated.
