Jackson Njau, associate professor in the department of Earth and atmospheric sciences at Indiana University, and collaborators at the Spanish National Research Council’s Institute of History have discovered the world’s oldest bone tools, according to new research in Nature. The tools were found in Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge, made from hippopotamuses and elephants, and are estimated to be at least 3.3 million years old. The new findings suggest that ancient humans used certain bones to make certain tools, suggesting that hominins were capable of thinking critically, identifying patterns and making connections. Yesterday we hosted the 2025 INSPIRE Benefit to raise critical funds to further care, support and research for Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. This year’s event highlighted Indiana’s leadership role in global Alzheimer’s and dementia research.
