Seat belt use is one of the most effective ways to save lives and reduce injuries in motor vehicle crashes, protecting drivers and all passengers. Based on this year’s survey conducted between June 2 and August 21, 2024, New York’s seat belt usage rate is 92%, a small decrease from 94% in 2023. The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year. It is a high-profile global event to remember the many millions who have been killed and seriously injured on the world’s roads and to acknowledge the suffering of all affected victims, families and communities – millions added each year to countless millions already suffering: a truly tremendous cumulative toll. On WDR we also pay tribute to the dedicated emergency crews, police, and medical professionals who deal daily with the traumatic aftermath of road crashes. Last week, highway safety professionals from across New York State gathered in Lake Placid, NY for the 2024 New York State Highway Safety Symposium. The event was sponsored by The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee of New York (GTSC), the NYS Association of Traffic Safety Boards and the NYS STOP-DWI Association, Inc. Our goal is to share, promote, and educate on highway safety initiatives with workshops and presentations covering the most critical issues and best practices from leading experts in traffic safety. Our 2024 event included: ? Over 300 attendees from over 100 different organizations/units ??9 Exhibitors ?5 Plenary Presentations ??21 Concurrent Sessions with 31 Speakers ?15 certificates were awarded for “Car Seat Basics for Law Enforcement” ??18 law enforcement officers participated in Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) Training And congratulations to the following award recipients: ?? The Putnam County Youth Bureau received the Chairman’s Award from the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) ?? Washington County Undersheriff John Winchell received the William T. Smith Award from the NYS STOP-DWI Association, Inc. ?? Police Officer Joseph D. Biondo from the Suffolk County Police Department received the Roy Thorpe Award from the NYS Association of Traffic Safety Boards And thank you to the planning committee for your incredible dedication and hard work in making this event a success! ITSMR staff at the 2024 NYS Highway Safety Symposium in Lake Placid, New York!

We are still talking about all the inspiring presentations and discussions at last week's 2024 Walk, Bike, & Roll NY Symposium in Binghamton, New York. Our symposium started with a welcome from City of Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham and opening remarks from DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. Opening Keynote Speaker, John Robinson from Our Ability, Inc., inspired our attendees to be inclusive, mindful, and proactive about providing opportunities, access, and resources to create an equitable world for people of all abilities. Tuesday was a full day of excellent presentations, discussions, and Lightning Roundtable Talks. Our afternoon included a fantastic Walking Tour with transportation provided by Broome County Transit and a Biking Tour led by the Southern Tier Bicycle Club. Our attendees returned to the DoubleTree by Hilton Binghamton for a lovely Evening Reception. Wednesday morning started with a Vulnerable Road User panel and more incredible sessions. Our event concluded with a Closing Keynote screening and discussion of the phenomenal film “Equity in Real Life” with producer and director Courtney Williams, The Brown Bike Girl founder and bicycle advocacy consultant who challenged our attendees to make bold decisions to make the world inclusive and equitable without fear.
