ITS America applauds the long-awaited release of significant updates to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) consumer-facing 5-Star Safety Ratings program, and the incorporation of new advanced driver assistance technologies into its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) Roadmap. While we are pleased to see the addition of some vehicle technologies in the Roadmap, we note a missed opportunity for the specific inclusion of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies that would provide singular improvement in safety for those both inside and outside vehicles. We encourage NHTSA to align its NCAP approach with related recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which has long supported the deployment of V2X technologies nationwide. V2X inclusion in NCAP is a critical enabler of getting to zero deaths on our roadways, and ITS America urges NHTSA to move swiftly to include V2X in the Roadmap. Innovation moves quickly. It is imperative that government work more iteratively with stakeholders to ensure that NCAP updates are published more frequently, and reflect all the tools at our disposal to save lives and make our roads safer. Last Friday, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced $172M in funding awards for the Safe Streets and Road for All (SS4A) program for planning and demonstration grants. This round of awards will go to communities across the country to advance safety and accessibility in their communities. Yesterday in honor of World Remembrance for Traffic Deaths Day, we remembered those who have tragically lost their lives in roadway crashes. Any life lost using our transportation system is unacceptable. Reaching zero deaths requires the implementation of a Safe System Approach, and ITS America advocates for a technology-forward approach with layers of protection for all: safe road users, safe vehicles, safe speeds, safe roads, and post-crash care. Today marks the third anniversary of the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) being signed into law. ?? This bill made significant investments in improving roadway safety, modernizing our nation's infrastructure, and supporting a more resilient and accessible transportation system for all road users.
