Founder, AuDHD nonprofit leader, computer science education revolutionary, award-winning scholar-practitioner
I learn so much every time I hear Wesley Giles and April Gao discuss their problem-first approach to app development. Today at Columbus Code and Coffee, I learned how they configured the tech stack to stay lean and work around not having a dedicated front-end developer on the team.

Friends, we are deep into recruiting Autistic and ADHD adults to participate in ITI Assistive Technologies Inc.'s research on how AI-powered decision-making support can improve our wellbeing. The research includes a chance to beta test Decide, our supported decision-making tool designed BY us FOR us. Only trouble is, last time I posted the screener link to socials, we got slammed with bots and fake sign-ups. ?? So, this time, I'm asking if you're interested in getting the link for yourself or for others, please comment on this post, and I'll DM you with it. My team is also emailing it to everyone we know or sort of know, so if you get an email from one of us, please consider forwarding it within your networks. Working together is how we #flipThePowerDynamic in autism research and funding!

Apologies to anyone looking for the link to our research study. We got slammed with a large amount of responses -- many of which (though not all) were likely from bots. We're taking down the link until we get a chance to filter what we've already received and protect the process. Stay tuned for more opportunities!

The Independence Through Interdependence Assistive Technologies Inc. team is taking the day off in honor of Juneteenth before our accelerator meeting tonight. In the spirit of the holiday, I thought I'd share some of the ways we're trying to create a business that acknowledges how far we still have to go in creating a society where everyone is free to thrive. This week's accelerator homework focused on identifying the hidden assumptions in our business model and figuring out ways to test them. With five of us working on it, we came up with a strong list covering various aspects of the business. Most of mine focused on the feasibility and sustainability of launching a successful tech start-up without exchanging equity for capital while prioritizing and investing resources in employee wellbeing over growth from day one. I've been thinking about how to test both concepts and have identified the following hypotheses: 1. Autistic/ADHD people do their best work when they feel psychologically safe. 2. People need to understand the social/organizational rules explicitly and witness those rules being applied to everyone equitably in order to feel psychologically safe. 2a. Equity among a diverse group of people is only possible when the group acknowledges the variation and inequities already embedded in the lived-experience of its members and flexibly and proactively levels the playing field as needed. 2b. Equity is a work in progress and will require constant learning, listening, and self-correction from everyone. 3. Most people need access to healthcare and emergency savings to feel psychologically safe. 3a. The burden of student loan debt drastically impacts overall financial wellness and psychological safety in the US. 4. Employee retention and performance will both correlate positively with psychological safety over time. 5. The company's internal policies and transparency will help us earn and maintain trust with the Autistic/ADHD community. 6. Earning and maintaining community trust will be key to launching a successful tech start-up without exchanging equity for capital. 7. The Autistic/ADHD community has the collective economic power to sustain a tech start-up focused on sustainability rather than growth. Thoughts?
