ITEP was created to act as a catalyst among tribal governments, research and technical resources at Northern Arizona University (NAU), various federal, state and local governments, and the private sector, in support of environmental protection of Native American natural resources. ITEP was established at NAU in 1992, in cooperation with USEPA. ITEP accomplishes its mission through several programs.

  • Air Quality Outreach and Education in Tribal Communities ?? January 14-16, 2025 ?? TAMS Center, Las Vegas Nevada This entry-level professional development course is designed to prepare tribal staff to conduct a variety of air quality education and outreach activities that will help tribal members increase the public awareness about environmental issues and increase tribal members’ abilities to make informed decisions that improve environmental air quality. Tribal staff will learn that environmental air quality education is a process that allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment.   • The Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) Waste & Response Program will host a two day, virtual training, "Advancing the Connections Between Food, Medicine, and Tradition in the Brownfield Process." This course will feature presentations by several Tribal professionals and will include small group discussions and facilitated conversations.   • We started the month of October with smiles, laughter, some fresh mountain air, and rejuvenated energy! The ITEP team participated in a staff retreat that consisted of team building, health awareness and wellness activities. It was a much needed day out of the office and into the pines. ???? A huge thank you to the Arboretum at Flagstaff and to all who participated!
