In his #AutoCon2 lightning talk, Eric Anderson discussed his organization’s journey with automated infrastructure service delivery. Their original problem? A never ending backlog of routine requests. His group wanted to automate the service request and delivery once it made it through the initial request and approval process. Crush that backlog. A major challenge was scalability of higher transaction volumes and complex workflows. Eric reported that they transitioned to the Itential orchestration platform that helped them unify their spread of scripts and other processes. Itential communicates with all of the tools and platforms in their IT environment, including ServiceNow, Splunk, GitLab, Infoblox, VMware, Cisco ISE, Cisco Meraki, and Office365. Leveraging the centralized orchestration platform model, they went on to automate switch deployment & refresh, new subnet creation, DNS requests, and more. Being able to show the value of this investment to management was a key takeaway for Eric. He used a time saved metric, among other things, calculating 15,324 hours or 7,114 days of saved time. That is, provisioning processes that used to take days (holding up the work waiting for them) are now completed in minutes.
