Our student chapter, in collaboration with our sister chapter ITS student chapter- University of Texas Arlington, hosted another biweekly guest lecture series on "Smart streets for All (SS4A)" with Aldo Fritz, AICP Fritz and Manuel (Alex) Montero from TJKM Transportation Consultants. The lecture series focused on the importance of creating smart streets that cater to the needs of all individuals, regardless of their mode of transportation. From pedestrians to cyclists to public transit users, SS4A aims to make streets safer and more accessible for everyone. The students had some great questions for Aldo and Alex, and their insights were truly eye-opening. We are grateful to Swastik khadka for organizing this event and to Mino Aji, M.S., EIT for hosting it. We had the opportunity to attend a lecture today by Monsur Ahmed, PE, PTOE , former Assistant Engineering Director for the City of Arlington. His insights into traffic engineering, drawn from his experiences in both public and private sectors, were incredibly valuable. Thank you, Dr. Taylor Li, Ph.D., P.E. , for organizing this event. It was a great chance to learn and engage with industry knowledge.

Yesterday was a day I had been looking forward to for weeks. I had the opportunity to attend a guest lecture with my all-time favorite, Stephanie Taylor, at the ITE Student Chapter- University of Texas at Arlington. And let me tell you, it was a delight as always! Stephanie's passion for advocating for pedestrians and cyclists truly shines through in everything she does. As she spoke about the importance of creating safe and accessible spaces for all road users, I couldn't help but feel inspired and motivated to do my part in making a positive impact. After the lecture, I had the chance to speak with our Chapter President, Swastik khadka, and we both agreed that everyone in attendance absolutely enjoyed Stephanie's presentation. Her encouragement to ask questions throughout made it so engaging for the students and we really appreciate her transparency about the system. Stephanie, you are a little bundle of joy and energy! From signage and markings to traffic signals, parking, and temporary traffic control, you covered it all with such enthusiasm. Thank you for inspiring us and for another entertaining and insightful session. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from you and can't wait for the next meet-up. This month is Pedestrian Safety Month, and we had the honor of hosting Stephanie Taylor, P.E., PTOE from LJA Transportation for a session on "Prioritizing Pedestrians and Cyclists in Traffic Engineering" as a part of our bi-weekly guest lecture series. Stephanie shared her insights on creating safer and more inclusive transportation systems that address the needs of all users. Her presentation emphasized the critical importance of integrating pedestrian and cyclist considerations into traffic engineering practices. Attended the Greater Fort Worth Section ITE meeting today and got the inside scoop on transportation highlights from Ricardo Gonzalez! Thank you for providing a clearer understanding of what's in store for consultants with Texas Department of Transportation. I also made some great new connections with Andrew Young, AICP, Lee Williams, PE, RSP1, and Chandra Muruganandham. And of course, it was wonderful to catch up with some of my favorite faces! This month is "Pedestrian Safety Month". According to the report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA, pedestrian fatalities have reached the highest in 40 years and about 20% of pedestrian crashes occurred at intersections. In recognition of pedestrian safety issues, we would like to share our faculty advisor, Taylor Li, Ph.D., P.E.’s efforts in pedestrian safety. Dr. Li’s research group reveals the latest pedestrian behaviors at signalized using LiDAR sensing technologies. Based on 30K data samples collected at Salt Lake City for 2.5 years, the researchers at The University of Texas at Arlington reveal three aspects of behaviors when pedestrians arrive, wait, and then cross a signalized intersection completely following traffic signals:?Delay?(to determine waiting time pattern before trying to jay-walk,?effective P-R time?(to determine the WALK duration) and?crossing speed?(to determine ped-clearance duration) Some fun facts: 3.5 ft/s crossing speed is still a rather conservative design principle. 5% percentile speed (among 30K samples) is 4.1 ft/s Effective P-R time: 5-sec min WALK is long enough for more than 87% pedestrians to enter the intersection during WALK. To reach 95+%, then the min WALK should be at least 6.5 sec Delay before crossing: Most legal ped crossings’ waiting time is shorter than 70 sec. There were outliers and the conclusion will vary from location to location. But the waiting time before crossing distribution can provide a lot of useful information. ? This research is a collaborative effort with Sirisha Kothuri (Portland State University) and Xianfeng (Terry) Yang (formerly U of Utah, now U of Maryland) sponsored by @NITC, a national UTC at Portland State University.

Today, our Student Chapter along with our sister organization ITS student chapter- University of Texas Arlington organized a visit to the Action Lab and the Smart Lab at The University of Texas at Arlington. This experience allowed our students to immerse themselves in groundbreaking research and witness firsthand the innovative projects shaping the future. The demonstration of the driving simulator and the insights from the real-time cabinet highlighted the incredible potential of technology in our lives.
