Think about it: Discontinuous walkways, pedestrian bridges that are tough to climb, lack of tactile paving, poor drainage, lack of pedestrian crossings and paths overtaken by vendors. These are small inconveniences for some but huge barriers for women, children, and people with disabilities. It’s a serious issue that leaves some of the most vulnerable in our cities struggling to get around safely and easily. In collaboration with the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative and the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Authority (NaMATA), ITDP is working to address these issues by evaluating how Nairobi’s BRT Line 3 can become more inclusive. ITDP has been working to enhance connectivity and urban design for walking, cycling, and public transport in Addis Ababa. Over the years, the city has seen a significant transformation in the quality of its infrastructure.

In addition, the team participated in the African Union PIDA Week 2024 conference, where we presented on how African cities can implement green mobility initiatives. The session also included a panel discussion with the Ministry of Transport and Logistics and Marathon Motors.

ITDP also joined different sessions in the Ethio Green Mobility 2024 Symposium, to advocate for the need to redirect transport budgets to walking, cycling, and public transport. State Minister Dhenge Boru, MOTL, reiterated the government’s commitment to expedite the implementation of the B2 BRT corridor.

This manual is a major step forward, providing a comprehensive guide to creating safer, more accessible, and inclusive streets for Ethiopia's rapidly growing urban population. It’s all about designing streets that put people first! ITDP and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) are proud to have provided technical support throughout this journey, helping shape the future of urban streets in Ethiopia. In addition, the manual includes an elaborate website with a design tool and various design templates to guide the adoption process. We had an incredible time at #WUF hosting different teams and organisations in Cairo. ITDP has been working in Cairo to implement the bikeshare system, supporting the implementation of bike lanes in down town Cairo and planning for the BRT system. In addition the team recently worked on an a national NMT Strategy to support walking and cycling in the city. Our team participated in various sessions promoting non-motorises transport infrastructure while also highlighting key examples from around the world. Kicking off #WUF12, ITDP and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) organized a walking tour to look at the pedestrian streets and bike share system in downtown #Cairo. Thank you to all those who joined us! The calmness of the city’s pedestrian streets, along with shade, public seating, and ground floor businesses, created walkable and enjoyable urban environments.
