Latest test results from Hugging Face on Open r1 model: average response size is large (6000 tokens). That was expected, for a Chain of Thoughts model. The direct consequence is likely an increased energy consumption during inference. This balances out with the lower compute energy of this model during training. https://lnkd.in/gt4m34g8
Here's a new acronym to add to the long list for LLMs: TPDPW - Token per Dollar Per Watt. A US centric version of a concept that attempts to bring together the cost of developing AI and its energy consumption. If it were to becomes a standard, this could be a way to force anyone building AI products and systems to think about sustainability as part of the inherent equation. The most interesting thing in tech: Satya Nadella of Microsoft has proposed a new metric for measuring the efficiency of AI models: tokens per watt per dollar. It’s a smart framework for how to bring energy costs into the way we track intelligence. He now thinks it could be an even broader metric for understanding output in an information economy. You might have seen this announcement about the Stargate project, a $500b pledge between the new US administration and private tech giants to build 12 data centers. Managed by Softbank, operated by Oracle, running and training OpenAI. Most of the AI tech leaders (except Elon Musk) have been cheering the news. A few areas of concern: - Where will the energy come from? nuclear plants will not be ready for another 5-10 years, so it will be natural gas -> increased carbon emissions. - What type of AI will be built? There are public claims from OpenAI of building AGI, solving health issues (curing cancer...). Bitcoin price hit $100,000 this week for the first time: while this is great news for Bitcoins holders, it is not so good for the environment. Bitcoin mining is currently surging (again). This results in a surge for power demand from data center operators, already overwhelmed by the demand from AI LLM training. The chances of Bitcoin moving to a more energy efficient proof of stake algorithm are pretty slim. Should it be brought back on the table?
