During the Web Summit, the Greenwich team undertook a comprehensive analysis of startup hiring processes in 2023, with a forward-looking perspective into 2024.? ? We’ve managed to interview over 30 companies, and outreached over 100 others to gather valuable data that we are eager to share. Our report collects a total of 125 answers with 90% being startups among which 30% are outsourced agencies.? ? When diving into the dynamics of hiring strategy in 2023, we found that 93% of companies reported no alterations to their hiring strategies, or in some cases, the absence of a formal strategy completely. The statistics of the hiring workflow in startups say that 48% of companies handled all positions internally through personal networks. It might be explained by the global budget cutoffs that directly affected recruitment departments making C-level executives cover positions by themselves sacrificing business operations. Another 40% relied on in-house recruitment departments, and only 12% turned to external recruitment agencies. Inquiries regarding the recruitment of specialists delivered insights that 52% of startups hired new specialists, ranging from 2-3 to up to 10 new team members, predominantly in the domains of development, product and sales. 48% refrained from hiring, mentioning no immediate need for additional team members. Ronald Hagenstein, co-founder of Verble mentioned, “In 2023, we hired around 2-3 new developers. Currently, there is no further plan”. While in the startup world, we can see a high demand for developer positions, general industry trends prove conversely – this year the demand for developers decreased while companies were focused mostly on hiring marketing specialists and managers. Besides, we can say that 2023 is officially a year with the most closed positions related to the legal and data protection departments. Interestingly, only 8% of respondents reported both terminating and recruiting specialists. As the integration of AI touches various industries, we asked about the adoption of AI tools in hiring processes. Despite many companies leveraging AI technology as their primary product, only 10% have incorporated or optimized AI in their hiring processes.? ? Ronald Hagenstein, co-founder of Verble, shared, "Even though our product is AI-based, we do not use AI for the recruitment process." Concluding our report, we present the outlook for 2024. Out of the 125 companies surveyed, 57% lacked specific plans or comments on the upcoming year, while 43% expressed an intention to expand their teams and hire new members despite the absence of a defined strategy. At Greenwich, we hope the upcoming year will witness an increase in new positions relative to those being discontinued, despite the controversial dynamics of 2023. Web Summit tips: Interview with the team ?? The Web Summit is over, and we're eager to share our thoughts and tips about the Web Summit, especially for those planning to attend next year. ???? Dzvinka, Recruiter, shared her perspective: "I loved the event format and the people I met during these 3 days. The event gave me an understanding of how important it is to improve networking skills both in offline and online environments. I gained valuable insights into recruitment processes that we'll share in our report. My recommendation for those planning next year's summit is to prioritize comfort. Since these days involve active networking, make sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes to avoid discomfort at the end of each day. Start preparing in advance, at least 2-3 months, to avoid exhaustion before the summit." ???? Daniel, BusDev, added, "I enjoyed the networking opportunities that Web Summit provides. I connected with over 200 people and shared industry knowledge. For me, the day summit is about work and communication, while evening events are for relaxing and enjoying the company of industry folks. My tip for next year's summit is to schedule as many meetings as possible in advance via the app. The app is a great tool for starting your network flow well before the summit. Another important tip is to be on your own. Even if you've arrived with a team, try to meet new people and explore interesting stands alone. By leaving your comfort zone, you'll be more motivated to network and achieve better results." ???? Oksana, CEO, commented: “I am happy to finally bring my team together for the Web Summit. I was impressed to see so many startups and new business ideas which proves that the industry is alive and ready to develop. For me, this summit is not only about getting new connections but also meeting partners from all over the world and exchanging with them. This year’s summit is all about AI and how it shapes the future, it’s crucial to listen to speakers and even if you lack time during the summit, you still have a chance to listen to the speeches via the app afterwards. If you’re planning to come for next year’s event, I’d recommend getting ready in advance – starting with exact goals, KPIs and strategy. Try to create a structure and divide your preparation into stages with separate KPIs for each. If you’re bringing a team, let them make fresh connections while being focused on strategic meetings. Plan most of these meetings during the first day of the summit to focus on extra tasks during the other days.
