The last International Congress of Neutron Capture Therapy? was full of significant moments for our society. One of the most exciting was certainly the presentation of the winners of the 20th Fairchild Awards. ?? We decided to make them better known to you by dedicating a post to each of them, starting today with Mailen Dattoli, the youngest of the winners! ????♀???? She is a PhD student in Physics at the National University of San Martin (Argentina), member of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council and the National Atomic Energy Commission.? ???? Mailen is working on dose/effect model development for BNCT and Monte Carlo simulations of irradiation experiments for biological samples and clinical treatments.?????????? Together with his colleagues, she participated in studying the development of a dose-response curve for the brain effect relevant to BNCT that explains what is observed in the clinic. ?? ? The shared figure shows the main features that imply and justify the development of dose and effect probability models for BNCT. First, the different dose components present in a BNCT irradiation are shown. A dose model is needed to translate the different components into equivalent units. The photon isoeffective dose model consists of finding the reference photon dose that produces the same biological effect as the BNCT doses. Mathematical formulations must take into account the synergism between the different types of radiation and the repair of damage in the tissue of interest. This model has been shown to explain the responses observed in the clinic of BNCT. This award represents an internal recognition within the scientific community in general and the ISNCT community in particular. After Krakow, another important event took place this year, The 20th Congress on Japanese Society of Neutron Capture Therapy. ???? ???? Held at the Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University on the 26th-27th of July, this event focused on the theme of ‘Integrating Research for Patients’. It is of paramount importance to mention that Japan has introduced BNCT as an integrated therapy in the national health care system ??, a great achievement that shows how the efforts of the last few years have been crucial and have enabled this extraordinary result to be achieved. The Congress was the perfect opportunity to highlight how research, cooperation, passion and commitment can lead to the desired results and have a real impact in our societies. ???? The President, Prof. Keiji Nihei, and Dr. Naonori Hu gave talks on clinical and medical aspects of BNCT on the 25th of July, during the 12th BNCT Workshop. ?????????? Participants were also able to visit the Kansai BNCT Medical Centre, designated to treat patients with BNCT under the Japanese national health insurance system.? A wonderful opportunity to experience the reality of a treatment center and have an exchange with the staff involved.???? Today we would like to wish all of us CTF members another happy year together! The 30th of September 2024 was the anniversary of our Task Force creation. Another year of work, exchange, commitment and friendship. ???? All the CTF members share a passion for BNCT research and a desire to cooperate to spread news, updates and contacts within the ISNCT community. ?? From year to year our community grows stronger, our work is enriched with new ideas and initiatives, and we expand with new members! Like our new fellow travellers who have joined us from China and Japan. ???????? Here they are: Dr. Jakkrit Prateepkaew from the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, Japan Research. Jak is in charge of Neutron Spectrometer development for BNCT. Dr. Yi-Chiao Teng, who works as a researcher at Neuboron Therapy Ltd, and she is responsible for clinical studies.
