Prefabrication is shaping FM's new #ShawmutBuilt 320,000-square-foot research and development complex in Norwood, MA—driving efficiency, safety, and precision at every stage. A prime example: the unitized curtain wall system. The team has been installing 615 unitized curtain wall mega panels, spanning 135,000 square feet of fa?ade. Built in a controlled environment, the triple-pane glass units maximize energy efficiency and undergo rigorous multi-step testing to meet FM’s enhanced performance standards. Hear more from Senior Project Manager Guy Tlapa below—and thanks to our partners at Island Facades for helping us reach this milestone.

For "Women in Construction Week" we'd like to highlight some of the incredible people who form our team at Island. Kacy Cunningham is a Sr. Project Manager who has been with with the company for 11 years, seeing to the success of many projects throughout the northeast. One of her favorite parts of working on such complex facade scopes includes the unique problem solving opportunities that keep each day interesting. We sat down with Kacy, who shared a look into the delivery of the newly completed unitized curtainwall and long-span glass fin systems at 10 World Trade. Everyone at Island is grateful to have Kacy's expertise and dedication as part of our team in Boston!

Our second completed project with WS Development in the Boston Seaport District, 400 Summer Street, stands at the southern gateway to Boston's 'innovation district.' The 16-story, 626,000ft2 tower is a core and shell research building constructed for Foundation Medicine and includes 30,000ft2 of retail space to support the mixed-use development. Buro Happold provided MEP/FP engineering, low-voltage engineering, sustainability consulting, energy analysis, and fa?ade design consulting, in collaboration with Morris Adjmi Architects and Stantec. The project is estimated to have a 40% energy reduction and 30% GHG reduction compared to a code-compliant building. The project also achieved LEED Platinum certification, and Buro Happold completed a Net Zero Energy/Carbon study to assess additional efficiency measures as well as illustrate the scale of off-site renewable power required to achieve net zero for an urban lab project.
