"Our team of microbiologists and technicians use a whole host of equipment to keep this operation running… Photobioreactors (AKA, PBRs) essentially Easy-Bake Ovens that supercharge algae production. K-Tubes and flasks, inoculated with new batches like a sourdough starter." Our friends at Island Creek Oysters shared their process of growing enough algae to feed the 5 BILLION oysters, clams, and scallops! WOW! What an engaging, informative few days with Hannah from Island Creek Oysters. Thirteen middle and high school teachers joined myself and Wade Institute for Science Education in learning about the science and engineering involved in oyster aquaculture. We learned all about the life cycle of an oyster, oyster grow out and farming, and phytoplankton. One of my favorite parts of this job is connecting with local organizations and learning from their education and content experts. Up next for me: Hurricane Heroes: A STEM Design Challenge
