关于我们
Welcome to the Institute for Spirituality and Health at the Texas Medical Center. Ours is a unique, independent, non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing well-being by exploring the relationship between spirituality and health. We accomplish this mission through education, research, and direct service programs. Our incredible staff consists of leaders who are passionate about helping those we work with with to discover wholeness in their pursuits. Established in 1955, the Institute was a founding member of the largest medical center in the world - the Texas Medical Center. While our programs and activities have shifted over time, we have always been dedicated to the concept that all humans are spiritual beings, and that healthcare should reflect this reality.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the 33rd Annual Psychotherapy & Faith Conference earlier this month, especially our supporters at Baylor College of Medicine and McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics at McGovern Medical School. We had a fantastic time exploring valuable insights on a range of topics from supporting patients with gender difficulties to discussing the exciting future of AI in healthcare. Our interfaith panel was particularly valued for illustrating how faith can be a tremendous source of support during difficult times. We were inspired to hear from representatives of the Zen, Jewish, and Islamic communities. Your participation made the conference special, and we truly appreciate it! For many, winter holidays bring joy and celebration, but also deep grief and loss. The emptiness of an absent loved one, sudden diagnoses, or unexpected changes can be particularly hard during this nostalgic time. Co-presented by the Institute and Rothko Chapel, the Silent Nights annual event creates a safe space to share grief stories and remind you that you are not alone. We'll hear from bereavement group members, engage in guided journaling meditation, and enjoy the healing sounds of crystal bowls by Reverend Gena Davis. Let’s be mindful of the mental, physical, and spiritual strain during the holidays, helping us manage stress and find spiritual renewal as we enter the new year. We were delighted to team up with Bo's Place last week for our annual symposium. Our panel discussion focused on four faith perspectives of bereavement and included voices from Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Each panelist shared insights about their faith’s views on death and dying, offered helpful tips for providing compassionate support to those who are grieving, and shared some great self-care ideas for those who support the bereaved. It was an enlightening and supportive experience for everyone involved! #ISHTMC #BosPlace #FaithPerspectives #Grief #SelfCare

The Interfaith Spiritual Care Coalition (ISCC) offers comprehensive training for a diverse group of volunteers based in Houston. Our mission is to provide spiritual care in settings that lack traditional chaplaincy programs, including hospices, home health agencies, and nursing homes. Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting individuals who may be experiencing social isolation or are nearing the end of their lives. These individuals often seek compassionate conversations about their purpose, the meaning of their lives, and their faith values. Through our program, volunteers are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to engage meaningfully with those in need, fostering a sense of connection and understanding during some of life's most challenging moments. If you have a calling to provide comfort and support in these critical situations, we invite you to join us in making a difference in the lives of others. Come to the Institute in person for our next training on Saturday, November 16, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
