As part of an engaging writing project focused on the "State of Data Science for Health in Africa," the NIH Fogarty International Center, in collaboration with the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) and the Data Science for Health Discovery and Innovation in Africa (DS-I Africa), organized a Writers' Retreat in the picturesque city of Cape Town, South Africa, from March 12th to 15th, 2024. This retreat brought together over 20 distinguished public health researchers, data scientists, and public health practitioners from across Africa. Their goal was to finalize manuscripts for submission to the prestigious journal Nature, contributing to a special collection dedicated to the advancement of data science within the African continent. Representing the NYU ISEE Lab, John Pate?a, MPH, MA took part as a co-author of a pivotal paper focusing on the critical themes of funding and investment for data science in Africa. This work was co-led by the esteemed Dr. Emmanuel Peprah of NYU GPH and Dr. Julie Makani of SickleInAfrica/Muhimbili University, showcasing a collaborative effort to highlight and address the financial underpinnings necessary for the growth of data science in the health sector across Africa.
