In operation, the DOL starter works as follows: 1. The circuit breaker is closed, allowing power to reach the rest of the circuit. 2. When the start button is pressed, the magnetic contactor is energized, closing its main contacts and connecting the motor to the power supply. 3. The motor starts immediately at full voltage (hence "Direct-On-Line"). 4. The overload relay continuously monitors the motor current. 5. If an overload occurs, the overload relay trips, opening the magnetic contactor and disconnecting the motor from the power supply. This system provides a simple and robust method for starting and protecting three-phase motors. However, it's generally suitable only for smaller motors, as larger motors may require more sophisticated starting methods to limit inrush current.
