Thank you Parade for featuring Isaac Health's Chief Medical Officer Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN in a recent article on beverages and cognitive health ?? From fruit juice to wine, Dr. Salinas weighs in on why certain drinks may have long-term effects on cognitive health. "Our brain is an energy-intensive organ that relies on a steady supply of nutrients to function properly. What we eat and drink can influence #brain function in both the short and long term," he says. For instance, while some beverages contain essential nutrients that support our brain health, others might cause inflammation, oxidative stress, or changes in brain structure over time, Dr. Salinas explains. These effects can have an important impact on cognition and overall brain health. Read the full article to learn more ?? https://lnkd.in/eFff_UQZ #BrainHealth #Neurology #Dementia

Did you know that napping can support your brain health? ?? A recent study published in Sleep Medicine examined how regular napping affects #brain function. Researchers found that people who took naps regularly performed better on attention and reaction-time tests compared to those who didn’t nap. Interestingly, even without a nap, habitual nappers showed naturally higher levels of alertness in the afternoon. When done at the right time and for the right duration, afternoon naps can support your brain function. Your brain is constantly processing new information and managing emotions, and giving it a short break can help strengthen your #memory, improve focus, and reduce stress and fatigue. A new study in BMC Medicine suggests that certain antidepressants (especially SSRIs) may be linked to faster cognitive decline in people living with #dementia. While this was an observational study and not a controlled experiment, the findings raise important questions about balancing #depression treatment with brain health. Scientists aren’t entirely sure why some antidepressants might make thinking and memory problems worse, but a few possibilities include: ?? SSRIs adjust levels of a brain chemical called serotonin. In a brain already affected by dementia, these changes might have unexpected consequences that speed up memory or thinking problems. ?? Some antidepressants also block a different neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which is very important for memory and learning. ???It's possible that individuals who needed stronger or more frequent antidepressants already had more severe dementia symptoms. The takeaway? Healthcare providers may be more cautious when prescribing antidepressants to people with dementia. At Isaac Health, our doctors recommend always doing a thorough medication review. In certain cases, it may also be advantageous to use the lowest effective dose of depression medication. For patients and caregivers, it's important to note that these findings are based on early evidence, and SSRIs have previously been found to be safe and provide a notable benefit in older adults. Because of this, no one should stop or change their medication on their own. Abruptly stopping an antidepressant can lead to withdrawal symptoms and a sudden worsening of both mood and cognitive problems. If you have any concerns about antidepressants and dementia, Isaac Health's multidisciplinary team is here to help. ?? Last week's panel, “Four Ways Healthcare is Transforming – and How Companies Will Need to Adapt to an Aging Population,” sparked a timely and important discussion on the future of care delivery for older adults. Our co-founder and CEO Julius Bruch, MD PhD had a fantastic time speaking alongside Debra Corbett (VNS Health), Luis Cunha (Vis-à-Vis Health), and moderator Lauren Flynn Kelly (AIS Health) on how the healthcare landscape is evolving in response to demographic shifts. Some key takeaways from the conversation: ?? Caring for the elderly is a hotspot for innovation. From aging-in-place solutions to specialized chronic disease management, there’s a growing focus on tech-enabled solutions to healthcare for older adults. ?? New technologies, including #telehealth and AI, are reshaping elder care. Digital solutions are making care more accessible and personalized. ?? New care models are creating new opportunities for established and new providers to work together for a more accessible, inclusive healthcare system. The TL;DR: With the aging population growing rapidly, healthcare leaders must embrace innovative digital solutions and leverage new care models to ensure better outcomes for older adults. Thank you to The Bliss Group for organizing this event! #ElderCare #HealthTech #AgeTech #DigitalHealth #BrainHealth #Dementia

?? By 2060, approximately 1 million Americans will be diagnosed with dementia each year, researchers estimate. A dementia care plan, also known as a nursing care plan (NCP) for #dementia, provides an outline for "how someone wants to be cared for if they develop cognitive impairment,” Isaac Health's chief medical officer Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN shared in an article for Care.com. This plan includes personal care preferences, medical wishes, and important financial and legal information. “Having a plan in place can prevent stress for loved ones and help ensure the best quality of life,” Dr. Salinas said. Important elements of a dementia care plan include: ? Healthcare power of attorney (HCPOA) ? Financial power of attorney (usually?durable POA) ? Trusted legal and financial contacts, such as an accountant or lawyer ? Advance directive?for all healthcare goals Care needs change over time as the disease progresses, Dr. Salinas noted, meaning that care plans should be adaptable. A clear plan helps reduce confusion for families and makes care more person-centered and effective.
