?? With Thanksgiving around the corner, many families might be wondering how to make the celebration enjoyable and inclusive for a loved one with dementia or cognitive impairment. Here are a few thoughtful steps curated by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America that you can take to ensure a dementia-friendly Thanksgiving holiday: ?? Schedule festivities around your loved one’s routine to reduce stress and consider earlier gatherings to minimize the effects of "sundowning." ?? Share photos or stories about guests ahead of time to prepare your loved one for the day. Prepare your guests, too –?you may consider sharing information such as ways to communicate with your loved one, what they respond well to, and what may cause distress. ?? Focus on what your loved one can do, like setting the table, listening to music, or reminiscing with photos. Activities with kids, like crafts or singing songs, can also be heartwarming and inclusive. ?? Provide a calm retreat where your loved one can take a break if needed, with familiar comfort items nearby. We hope these tips help make your celebration special. Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and joyful Thanksgiving from all of us at Isaac Health ?? #Dementia #Alzheimers #Thanksgiving

?? "Mental health is just one component of brain health. I often think about this traditional dichotomy or split between neurologists and psychiatrists, and how we're really still looking at the same part of the body. The overlap between what we do is really quite significant." – Dr. Patrick Hou, MD, MPH, clinical psychiatrist at Isaac Health Tune in as Isaac Health's Drs. Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN and Patrick Hou discuss the importance of framing mental health as brain health, and how there is often a bidirectional relationship between neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (ADRD) and psychiatric conditions like anxiety and depression. ?? As research has shown, untreated depression and anxiety among older adults can increase risk for dementia onset and progression. In a similar vein, the emotional toll of ADRD for individuals and families can also lead to heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. Isaac Health is proud to offer psychiatric and behavioral health services under the flagship brain health program. These services are designed to support the emotional and psychological well-being of people living with ADRD and their loved ones. We're so excited to partner with Greater Good Health to offer comprehensive #dementia care and family caregiver support in Montana ?? Montana is classified as a dementia neurology desert, meaning that the largely rural state is projected to have <10 neurologists per 10,000 people with dementia in 2025 (source: Society of Actuaries). Statewide, approximately 21,000 people aged 65+ are living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) today, and an estimated 17,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease. This partnership expands access to essential services such as specialist dementia care, caregiver training, respite care, care navigation, and a 24/7 support line, all fully covered by Medicare for eligible individuals. We're here to ensure that even the most remote communities have access to vital care and resources, so no one has to navigate this journey alone. ??
