This past Thursday, ICC celebrated the opening of the ICC 55 Library Archive at the Newark Public Library NJ. We had an incredible turnout for our exhibit and staff impact panel. Thank you to everyone who attended and participated. This was a great moment of celebrating Ironbound history and the legacy of changemaking at ICC. The exhibit is free to all to view at the Newark Public Library - Main Branch through December 2025. Our Archive is on view today through December 31st, 2025, at the Newark Public Library NJ "The Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) was established in 1969 to work for the interests of neighborhood residents. In the 55 years of its existence, it has evolved into one of Newark's most respected institutions. It has far exceeded its state mission to "engage and empower individuals, families, and groups in realizing their aspirations and, together, work to create a just, vibrant, and sustainable community." This exhibit explores the organization's past through its archive. Many of the items in the archive — photos, correspondence, fliers, maps, and other material — were saved by longtime employee Nancy Zak. We hope not only to show the importance of ICC's work to the community but also to instill in others the importance of archives and the need to preserve history." Indigenous Peoples ' Day first took root during a U.N. conference on discrimination in 1977. The movement to replace Columbus Day continues to spread across the U.S. Today, 14 states, the District of Columbia, and over 130 cities celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring Indigenous cultures and promoting scholarships to support Indigenous access to education. Indigenous people in America contributed significantly to the development of the country through their agricultural practices, including the cultivation of crops like corn, beans, squash, potatoes, and tomatoes, which became staples in the American diet; their medicinal knowledge, leading to the discovery of plants used in modern medicine; and their political systems, like the Iroquois Confederacy, which influenced the structure of the US government. They also contributed to place names across the country, with many states and cities named after indigenous words. Celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day!
