???? Congratulations to Stephen Fry, who has been awarded the James Joyce Award by the UCD Literary & Historical Society in recognition of an extraordinary career that has spanned over three decades. At the ceremony, Fry commented: “It so happens that your great alumnus James Joyce is a true hero of mine. He was an extraordinary writer and one who still, I think, can be described as the greatest prose writer in the English language." "This is an extraordinary honour...more meaningful than any other prize I could possibly have”. Considered among the highest honours that any student body in Ireland can bestow, the James Joyce Award is given by the Literary & Historical Society to public figures who have achieved outstanding success in their given field. Recipients have ranged from lauded political figures and skilled actors and sportspeople. Previous James Joyce awardees include Nobel Laureate poet Seamus Heaney, actor Will Ferrell, and former speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

I got my hands on a golden shark yesterday. Here's how it happened... One of the best things about being a documentary-maker in the 21st century is the flexibility of the form. From feature-length films designed to be enjoyed in the cinema, to micro-projects shot on a phone and posted to social, the variety of ways to tell true stories has never been greater. Sometimes I get asked to make documentary films for brands and companies. It's not something that I do often, but if the fit is right then it can work very well. Working with Designbank, Marketing by Design and Thor O'Brien, on some films for Wren Urban Nest Dublin was a great example of what happens when it goes right. They had an idea - make a short documentary film about the Wren Urban Nest's blankets. The execution they left to us (myself and editor/producer Michael O'Sullivan) The trail led us to the beauty of the Mourne Mountains and to a gorgeous three generation family business MOURNE TEXTILES LIMITED who wove the blankets for the hotel. Karen Hay-Edie and Mario Sierra welcomed us and guided us through their making process. We followed the provenance trail deeper into the mountains to the very source of it all woollen products: sheep! Freda Magill of The Wool Initiative Company Passion is a glib and overused word these days - but sometimes you meet some who is genuinely in love with what they do, and Freda's love of sheep and their wool was palpable. The film is deliberately simple, calmly shot in 4:3 aspect ratio in a series of static frames that don't scream for your attention. It begins with some black and white lambs in their pasture, and follows the journey ending with a black and white blanket on a hotel bed. The client in this instance left much of the job to us, setting the brief but allowing us to take creative ownership which I think is key to making projects like this work. So what's this got to do with sharks? A few weeks back I was really surprised and delighted to find that the film was nominated for a Kinsale Shark Award for branded content. I was even more delighted to find out that we won a Gold Award. The Sharks have been a big fixture in the advertising/promo/short film/music video/branded content world for a long time now, so winning was great: another item ticked off my director's bucket list. Big shoutout to former guest for her steadfast support of migrants in American. An understanding of Irish migrant history requires of all Irish American residents, whether born in Ireland or the descendants of migrants, to remember the challenges and difficulties faced by those who came before and to be supportive of migrants who come to the country and endeavor to make a life here within the confines of the law. Forgetting to attribute much of the genius that has made America an extraordinary country to the vitality provided by #migrant communities is a perilous mistake. America faces a demographic reality consistent with the rest of the western world. Without a revision of thinking and hard work from our elective representatives, we will have an increasing greying of American and the problems associated with an inversion of the population pyramid Our failure to make any significant revisions to migration legislation is a sad hallmark of just how devisiive our political landscape has become. Fiona McEntee reminds us that #immigration should be supported and fiercely advocated for by all #IrishAmericans who know their history and remember: “There for the grace of God, go I” #GlobalIrishNation
