The Irish American Partnership and Gaelic Players Association (GPA) strengthen their long-standing relationship with a $128,000 commitment to support careers in education. Over the next four years, funding from the Partnership will support the Education Champion Scholarships program, funding 32 inter-county players pursuing further education in teaching. The scholarship recipients—one from each county—are student teachers and postgraduate students dedicated to advancing their careers in education. With over 300 GPA members in the teaching profession, this initiative highlights the strong connection between Gaelic players and the classroom. The scholarships were awarded last night at a special event at the Alex Hotel in Dublin, attended by President & CEO Mary Sugrue, GPA CEO Tom Parsons CEng FIEI. Congratulations to Irish America Business 100 honoree Mary Sugrue. Mary Sugrue is the President and CEO of the Irish American Partnership, an organization to which she has dedicated over 35 years of service. Joining the Partnership two years after its inception, she has taken on various roles, each one contributing to the organization’s growth and helping shape its mission. Appointed CEO in 2016, Mary has overseen a period of remarkable growth while maintaining the Partnership’s grassroots nature. During her tenure, the Partnership has raised over $57 million to support educational initiatives across the island of Ireland. With a belief that strong relationships are key to fostering trust, Mary has ensured the organization’s impact remains embedded in local communities. This leadership has expanded educational support at all levels across Ireland, from early childhood programs to university scholarships and vocational training. Passionate about connecting people back to their ancestral home, Mary has also introduced Partnership events across the United States that celebrate Irish culture and strengthen ties to Ireland. Originally from Cahersiveen, County Kerry, she earned a degree in education from the National University of Ireland, Carysfort College Dublin, before moving to Boston. This morning, supporters and friends of the Irish American Partnership gathered at the Boston Harbor Hotel to welcome United States Ambassador to Ireland Claire Cronin home to Massachusetts at the conclusion of her distinguished diplomatic mission. Joined by Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll and former Congressman Joe P. Kennedy III, we celebrated Ambassador Cronin’s exemplary leadership, her unwavering commitment to public service, and her remarkable efforts to strengthen the transatlantic relationship between the U.S. and Ireland. In a wide-ranging discussion with Professor Mary C. Murphy of the Irish Institute at Boston College, our 2025 Nollaig na mBan honoree spoke warmly about the people of Ireland, reflected on her extraordinary career in public service, and congratulated the Partnership on its impactful work at the grassroots level, supporting education across the island of Ireland. Consul General of Ireland, Sighle FitzGerald warmly welcomed an audience of over 300 guests and highlighted the profound impact Ambassador Cronin has made during her travels across the length and breadth of Ireland.
