Key finding: Research universities invest in prosperity Since 2015, The University of Kansas has used IRIS reports to demonstrate how their pioneering research invests in the prosperity of Kansas communities and bolsters the national economy. ?? Last year, research expenditures at KU supported the salaries of 5,595 people ?? KU spent $86.5 million in 91 Kansas counties on research-related goods and services in fiscal year 2024 ?? KU research contributed $1.34 billion to the U.S. economy between 2011 and 2023 through spending with more than 7,700 vendors and subcontractors, of which 990 were small businesses. This expansion also reinforced our capacity to create insightful national and state-level reports on the collective economic and social contributions of research investments.
