If AGI proves to be a “winner-take-all” scenario where the first company or country to develop AGI dominates, then the first AGI must also be the safest. The safest, fastest, path to AGI may be to harness the collective intelligence of multiple AI and human agents in an AGI network. This approach has roots in seminal ideas from four of the scientists who founded the field of AI: Allen Newell, Marvin Minsky, Claude Shannon, and Herbert Simon. In this presentation at the 17th annual conference on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI-24) in Seattle, WA, Dr. Craig A. Kaplan describes an innovative approach to developing AGI. The key motivation behind Kaplan's approach is to?design?AGI to be safe rather than trying to test-in safety. This will harness the collective intelligence of millions of human and AI agents to create a transparent, predictable, and trusted AGI that learns.?Many agents, each possessing expertise and ethical knowledge, work together on a network to create AGI-level performance at the network level.? Cognitive architectures (e.g., adapting architectures like the SOAR architecture developed by Allen Newell, Paul Rosenbloom, and John Laird) can help integrate the problem-solving efforts of human and AI agents.?Other architectures, including some with the ability to record problem-solving steps and to compensate problem solvers using blockchain or cryptocurrency technology, are also viable.?Scalable safety features should be part of the architecture to maximize safety and alignment no matter how intelligent the system becomes.? Kaplan believes a collective intelligence approach to AGI?(and SuperIntelligence) is faster, safer, more transparent, more powerful, and much more cost-effective than approaches that rely exclusively on training very large LLMs.?
