The Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) at the University of North Florida was established in 1980 to provide cost-effective, cutting-edge training to the criminal justice community, to enhance the quality of service by law enforcement to our communities. IPTM has grown into the largest and most varied national law enforcement training institute in the country. IPTM conducts more than 400 courses to approx. 10,000 law enforcement professionals from across the United States, the U.S. territories, and many foreign countries each year. We deliver classroom instruction on campus in Jacksonville, online or on-site at your agency. IPTM also offers on-site contract training, which can be a cost effective means for obtaining customized instruction designed to meet your specific needs. Hosting training at your agency is another cost-saving option. Our courses are designed to improve the skills and abilities of officers and acquaint them with the new technology, theories, and techniques in their fields of interest. Symposium on Traffic Safety Spotlight | Impaired Driving Track A Deeper Dive Into Diabetes Sergeant Josh Wilson, Washington County, Hillsboro, Oregon This presentation – presented by a Type 2 diabetic and the parent of a Type 1 diabetic – will provide additional insights beyond basic DUI training regarding drivers who may be experiencing a diabetic medical event. The topics covered will include: an overview of Type 1, Type 2, gestational, and other forms of diabetes; signs of diabetic emergencies, such as critically low blood glucose and diabetic ketoacidosis; medications and supplies that a diabetic might have with them; how to distinguish between a diabetic event and alcohol or drug impairment; what steps to take when encountering a diabetic driver; considerations for crash investigations and actions to take to eliminate defenses in DUI investigations. Our Leadership and Management Section Coordinator, Teresa Dioquino, attended the FRA Police Recruitment and Retention Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada last week. One of highlights was meeting Law Enforcement officers throughout the United States and Canada. She had the pleasure of sitting with members of the Rockwell, Texas and Bowling Green, Kentucky Police Departments, Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, California, and Brandon Police Service, Manitoba Canada. Today, students from New Mexico, Tennessee, and Canada conducted scenario-based evidence collection and vehicle inspections in Commercial Vehicle Crash Investigation - Level II in Carlsbad NM. This week, they’ve learned advanced applications of air brake operation, axle weight analysis and load reconstruction, dynamic rollover analysis with liquid and semi-liquid loads, off tracking, and much more. Many thanks to the Eddy County, NM Sheriff's Office for hosting Level I and II, and to Gama LLC Transport and BTS Enterprises for the loan of their tractor-trailers. Our hearts are with the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office as they mourn the loss of Deputy Felicia (Robin) Kinsey-Smith. Robin has been a Florida Drug Recognition Expert since 2019, during which time she evaluated 75+ drivers suspected of drug-impaired driving. She was named the Florida Department of Transportation District 6’s “2022 Top DUI Officer" and recognized for her outstanding dedication to law enforcement by the Florida chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in 2024. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her loved ones. She was always a pleasure to work on the DRE program. May this tragedy remind us of the importance of mental health and peer support. Commercial Vehicle Crash Investigation - Level I is being hosted by the Eddy County, NM Sheriff's Office in Carlsbad, NM this week.
