Component Sourcing & Selection Component sourcing is a critical part of the PCB assembly process in order to ensure a quality build that meets your expected turnaround time. There are several factors to consider when sourcing for components: - Component types?– what types of components are you needing? Capacitors, resistors, inductors, diodes, relays, power supplies, heat sinks… the list goes on! - Component availability?– ensure the part you’ve selected has sufficient quantity. It is better to source from one vendor to avoid tracking multiple shipments which would have different delivery dates. - Lead times?– even when after find the right components for your build, you must consider the lead time to receive your required parts. Lower quantities often mean a higher piece price in conjunction with your shipping method. Choosing an expedited shipping method inherently carries a higher cost. - Obsolete parts?– is your build a one-time proto, or are you expecting to repeat this build consistently? At that point, you must decide whether a cheaper, near end-of-life part, is better than a readily available updated part number. - Acceptability of part alternates?– while you may request a specific 0204 from a specific manufacturer, would it be acceptable to source the same component with the same specifications from another manufacturer? This may be worthwhile if lead times are shorter for this alternate (and cheaper!)
