  • ???Tradability, Interoperability, and Mutual Recognition in Hydrogen Certification??? As countries and regions —such as the EU, Japan, and Korea— aim to secure hydrogen imports meeting specific product attributes, the landscape of certification schemes becomes increasingly complex. Key Concepts: Tradability: The ability to trade hydrogen without barriers due to differing certification requirements. This concept exists on a spectrum, ranging from numerous independent schemes to a unified global certification system. Interoperability: The technical aspect of tradability, focusing on the capacity of certification schemes to exchange and utilize information effectively, enabling seamless operation. Mutual Recognition: The legal dimension of tradability, establishing a framework for recognizing the equivalency of different certification schemes or their components, facilitating smoother cross-border trade. The current fragmentation of compliance markets poses challenges for developing a global hydrogen market. By understanding and addressing the nuances of tradability, interoperability, and mutual recognition, we can foster a more cohesive and efficient international value chain for certified hydrogen.??? • ???Key Stakeholders in Hydrogen Certification Schemes??? A variety of stakeholders play crucial roles in the operation and effectiveness of hydrogen certification schemes: Governments and Legislators: They set the rules for compliance schemes, ensuring consumer protection and preventing fraud. Producers: Utilize certification to validate their products for regulatory or voluntary purposes. Traders/Suppliers/End-Consumers: Leverage certificates to disclose information and comply with mandatory requirements, such as emissions thresholds. Certification Scheme Owners: Design and operate schemes, ensuring their credibility through government oversight. Certification Bodies: Independent entities that validate compliance with standards, often employing auditors for thorough assessments. Issuing Bodies: Ensure the accuracy of information on certificates and may overlap with certification bodies. Accreditation Bodies: Assess and monitor certification bodies to maintain public trust and integrity. Scheme Participants: Organizations implementing certification requirements without being involved in the scheme's development. Supervisory Authorities: Monitor compliance and hold certification bodies accountable to ensure credibility. Standards Development Organizations (SDOs): Create and disseminate voluntary technical standards, ensuring consistency across the industry. These stakeholders collectively contribute to the robustness and transparency of hydrogen certification, facilitating a trustworthy market for sustainable energy.??? • ????Fundamental Design Principles for Hydrogen Certification Schemes???? To ensure the effectiveness and integrity of hydrogen certification, four fundamental design principles must be prioritized to the key elements previously introduced: Robustness: This entails having clear definitions and methodologies for measuring product attributes, ensuring consistent application across the board. A credible system of checks and balances, overseen by an authority, is essential to maintain trust. Transparency: Information about definitions, methodologies, and processes should be disclosed in a clear, neutral manner. Publicly available tracking requirements promote accountability and enable external reviews. Impartiality: Definitions and methodologies must remain unbiased, ensuring accurate measurements of product attributes. Independent certification bodies and auditors should declare any potential conflicts of interest to maintain credibility. Accuracy: Minimizing error margins in quantifying product attributes is crucial. This includes strong provisions for tracking and tracing to prevent fraud and ensure reliability throughout the certification process. Implementing these principles will pave the way for a transparent and trustworthy hydrogen market, essential for driving the energy transition.?? • ????Happy?Global Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day???? On October 8th, the IPHE celebrates Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, chosen for the atomic weight of hydrogen (1.008), the lightest and most abundant element in the universe. Hydrogen plays a crucial role in many applications, such as clean energy technologies, and is used in many sectors – including transportation, energy storage and power generation, and heavy chemical/industrial processes. Here, hydrogen helps drive innovation, supporting decarbonization while enhancing energy security. To celebrate, you can take a 1.008 km walk or run in your local park or community, and share your experience on social media using the hashtags #H2DayWalk or #H2DayRun ??♂? ??♀? Capture the moment with a photo, or use one of the H2 walk/run graphics or a customized certificate in your post https://lnkd.in/g_8EpSVD Looking ahead, IPHE is looking forward to many initiatives set to come out of COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku related to hydrogen and to accelerate development and adaptation: ???COP29 Hydrogen Declaration: Unlock the potential for a global clean hydrogen market by addressing regulatory, technological, and financial barriers ???Baku Initiative for Climate Finance, Investment and Trade (BICFIT): Supporting hydrogen by promoting investments in green diversification, support policy development, and share expertise through dialogue ???Global Energy Storage Pledge: A pledge to substantially increase global energy storage capacity, essential for renewable energy and hydrogen production The IPHE is actively working in many of these areas, for instance through its Working Groups on Regulations, Codes, Standards,?& Safety as well as Task Forces on Trade Rules and Certifications. Relevant material such as the Review and Gap Assessment of Bulk Hydrogen Storage can be accessed on the IPHE website or here https://lnkd.in/gbvCQ7iW #HydrogenDay #CleanEnergy #FuelCells

  • ???Key Elements of Hydrogen Certification Schemes??? To ensure the effectiveness and reliability of hydrogen certification, four key elements must be in place: Product Attributes: These are the specific characteristics that the certification schemes aim to validate, along with the methodologies for measuring them. Operational Set-Up and Procedures: A well-defined institutional framework and processes are essential for the smooth functioning of any certification scheme. Chain of Custody: This model tracks and traces product attributes throughout the supply chain, ensuring accurate information during every transaction. Information Technology (IT): A robust IT system is vital for managing the certification process, serving as a repository for certificates from issuance to cancellation and facilitating compliance tracking. These elements collectively enable transparency, accountability, and trust in the hydrogen market, paving the way for a sustainable energy future.?? • ????Key Terms and Concepts???? A certification system encompasses the legal, institutional, procedural, and technical frameworks necessary to ensure compliance and transparency in hydrogen production and trade. Here’s a closer look at its critical components: Certification System: The entire framework for certifying hydrogen, which includes compliance regulations and voluntary agreements. Certification Schemes: Instruments confirming that a product meets specific requirements, which can either be mandated by government authorities or established by third parties. Energy Attribute Certificates: Documents that provide information about the energy's origin and sustainability attributes, enabling traceability throughout the supply chain. Sustainability Certificates: Primarily used in the EU, these certificates confirm the sustainability aspects of hydrogen, ensuring traceability from production to consumption. Chain of Custody Models: Mass Balance Model: Tracks and traces the total amount of certified products, ensuring a physical link to end-users. Book and Claim Model: Separates physical products from their certified attributes, allowing for more flexible trading of certificates. Together, these elements create a robust framework that fosters trust and accountability in the hydrogen market. As we move towards a sustainable energy future, effective certification schemes will be pivotal.??
