Investment, innovation, and collaboration is needed to address the #AMR threat. From the development of new antibiotics...to the use of viruses (bacteriophages!) to combat #drugresistant infections...to the opportunity to use both(!), in tandem(!) - let's get creative and tackle it, #together.
39 million lives could be lost to drug-resistant infections between now and 2050. So why isn’t there more urgency to develop new antibiotics to counter #AMR? Read more: Via The Conversation UK?

The misuse and overuse of antibiotics greatly contribute to the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), worsen patient outcomes, and increase health-care costs. What is the potential of digital health technologies in addressing this growing threat? Check out an exciting new paper from Paul Bollyky and colleagues, published in Nature Communications! It explores how soil bacteria develop resistance to phages. Researchers found that bacteria evolve CRISPR-Cas immune systems more readily under nutrient-rich conditions, revealing new insights into #microbialevolution and phage-bacteria dynamics. This understanding is key for advancing #phagetherapy and managing #resistance in clinical and environmental settings. #Microbiology #PhageTherapy #CRISPR #BacterialResistance #ScientificInnovation

?? Big news for Portugal!!
A historic day for Portugal and phage therapy! A phage therapy framework was approved, allowing magistral preparation of personalized phage products. This was done in part by a petition (inspired by the Belgian phage therapy model) signed by Portuguese patients and doctors, as well as Jean-Paul Pirnay and Joana Azeredo’s groups. Congratulations Portugal!

? #didyouknow ? #Clostridioidesdifficile (C. diff) is a germ (bacterium) that causes diarrhea & colitis (an inflammation of the colon) and can affect anyone. You are 7 to 10x more likely to get C. diff infection while taking antibiotics and during the month after. That’s because antibiotics that fight bacterial infections by killing bad germs can also get rid of the good germs that protect the body against harmful infections, like C. diff infections.
