One of the best parts of the Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference is the opportunity each participant has to pitch their business idea for a chance to win money to put towards their business! For the second year in a row, we were able to offer two pitch competitions to our attendees. The first was hosted by the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship and the Iowa SBDC, and those who pitched had the chance to win up to $2,500 for their business. The second pitch competition was generously hosted by the 11/11 Veteran Project. The prize for this competition was the opportunity to have your business logo on the side of Colin Garret's race car, with additional promotional opportunities provided (a $10,000 value). This year's pitches were extremely competitive, and we applaud all those who participated. In the business pitch competition, Jake Bruggeman (Work Truck) took first place ($2,500), Jathan Chicoine (Native Prairie Bison) took second place ($1,500), and Eric Polky (Kevo Fantasy Arts and Crafts) took third place ($1,000). In the 11/11 Veteran Project pitch competition, Jake Bruggeman was awarded first place and will have his logo placed on the side of Colin Garret's race car. Congratulations to all those who participated!

What a pleasure to have attendees like Burkensnacks, LLC join us for the 2024 Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference. We are so happy to hear you gained new insight into your business. We hope to see you next year!
I cheated. After a half day of driving from Davenport to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference , I was ready to take no prisoners. The conference was yesterday, but there was a pitch competition on Friday that was the real motivation to make the long drive. Getting to tell people about cookies and why we do what we do is something I am very passionate about. And with the opportunity to win a cash prize in the mix, I could not pass up this opportunity. There would also be a second pitch back to back with the first (literally) for the opportunity to partner with the 11/11 Veteran Project in their mission to support veterans. After my history, this is very close to my heart. There were about a dozen other veteran entrepreneurs in the competition with me and I was ready to take no prisoners. After all, the US Marine Corps taught my "the only unfair fight is the one you lose" so I came ready with a good story and better cookies. Our fresh chocolate chip cookies were a huge hit and my unorthodox presentation really got their attention. Unfortunately for me, the US Marine Corps also taught me that my opponents also make plans. So they were ready as well. The top three winners had better stories and proposals and I fully support their missions. We didn't "win" the competition but I plan to compete again next year and will prepare even better next time. Yesterday, we were also presented with great strategies to market and promote our business as well as some great general tips for gaining knowledge in our market and how to grow along the way. Thank you to all I met this weekend and had the opportunity to share our traditional chocolate chip cookies with. I hope to stay in touch. God Bless, Michael

It was a pleasure to kick off the 2024 Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference with keynote speaker Allen Lazard (Wide Receiver for the New York Jets). He shared about his foundation, At the Top for Veterans, and provided inspiration and encouragement to veterans and military personnel who are reintegrating into civilian life. “Pursue something that you love and don’t get emotionally tied to the results of it. Transitions are great because they allow for growth. Have the courage to lean into the opportunity.” “Lean into the uncomfortable, ask for help. A lot of times, we get in our own way of success.” Thank you, Allen, for spending your morning at the Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference!

Thinking about attending the Iowa Veteran Entrepreneur Conference next year…? These two showed up at the 2023 conference, and found themselves at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway a few months later, with racing champion Colin Garrett. Never miss an opportunity to expand your network and partnerships. Aniekanabasi White and Gerald Young are partnering with Colin and his 11/11 Veteran Project in an extremely innovative project, all because they took the time to learn and grow at the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship.
